Hi, new barchetta owner here. I bought the car knowing there would be a few things needing done one of which is the repair of the roof. As you can see in the pics the canvas has detatched from the framework at both sides which creates a horrible noise in the cabin with the roof up. The windows also don't aline properly with the rubber seel. So I think I'm probably looking at a new roof but I thought I would get the opinions of a few other barchetta owners first. Has anyone else had work done to their roofs? I'm not even sure where I would take it to have work done. I'm based in the Scottish Borders so Edinburgh would be the most likley bet to find a decent repair shop.

One other thing I noticed is the electrical cable running around the edge of the roof seel, what is this for? Possible electric roof, heated rear screen?

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

You need to replace that roof as soon as funds permit. As far as repairing goes, the only thing owners tend to repair is the plastic rear screen if it ever splits.

The only bare cable I have in my car is on the door pillar behind the drivers seat which is for the hardtop rear heated screen.

I have had my roof replaced with Mohair which cost approx £420. I have seen quotes from £400-800 so shop around!
Alternatively you can buy the material from Ebay for around £200ish and replace the roof yourself...

Thanks for the reply.

Did the price you paid include fitting? I might consider fitting it myself if the job were simple enough. I'm guessing I might have to re-aline the windows to fit.

I'm starting to think that the previous owner has used electrical cable as a temporary way of creating a seel around the edge.

It was £420 incl fitting and a 12 month warranty. There is a guide to fit your own soft top, I think it was made by a member called Alan.
The previous owner probably didn't want to splash out on a new roof so you may find in other areas things have been bodged.
You can adjust the windows by taking off the door panel and adjusting grub screws. I will find the guide for you.
Unfortunately people have a habit of closing the door by pushing the window which caused the plastic internal window guides to snap, so sometimes no amount adjustment will cure wind noise or water ingress.

Here is the window adjustment;

A. Horizontal plane
B. Height of the window
C. Angle of the window mechanism

Thanks for that. The best price I have seen so far is £325 un-fitted for a mohair roof which seems fairly reasonable.

Not sure where you got yours but that quote was from carhoodsdirect. I see there is allready a post dedicated to fitting your own hood. I think I'll give it a go.

My quote was from http://www.soft-tops.co.uk/ for £420 but they may charge more considering you live on the edge of the earth...:D

Still?
In the time you have been waiting for tiles I have re roofed a conservatory with a pitched roof which consisted of flitch beams, a wall plate all the joists, 3 Velux windows, battened and tiled with slate, insulation, plaster boards fixed and plastered.
To top it off, didn't use ridge tiles so the hips took twice as long.
Boy did my arms ache after cutting all that slate....

A hard top sounds good for the winter. I think I'll settle for a mohair soft-top for now though.

Another thing that I'm not sure about is the cambelt. I've read that they need changed, some say at 40,000 miles, some say later. My car is at 50,000 miles. It has a limited service history so I'm really not sure if it has been done yet. Would it be easy to tell by looking at the condition of the belt if it has been done or not?

Barchetta parts has a complete s/h black hardtop for €750..expensive if you add the shipping cost. Main issue wih ordering a hardtop seems to be the cigar box crate it it comes in..any rough handling stoves in the wood and the lid takes the damage.
