Since yesterday my barchetta is making a strange sound coming from the engine. I could describe it like a belt sometimes slipping.
The mechanic changed the aux belt and spanner but that didn't fix it.

I can only hear it when i rev from 2000rpm and 2500rpm.
When driving in this range you can practicly almost hear it. When shifting down or letting the revs go in this rmp range it i hearable.

edit: the sound is NOT always hearable when the car is out of gear, i noticed it gets a bit worse when engine gets warmed up. I pulled in 3 different garages to let them hear to the sound, but first 2 times woudn't make the sound appear. Even after 70km drive

I situated the sound near the left of the engine bay (when in front of the car).

The only °°°°° up thing is that i'm going on vacation with the b, about 3000km to corsica.

Do I have anything to fear ?:(

If its something screeching, then its a moving part, If youve changed yr aux belt, It could be the bearings in the alternater. Have someone check yr timming belt to be sure there is no problem with that and maybe the waterpump too.

It's indeed a whirring sound. I searched through all topics but no simular sound. Variator is not cousing dieselsound, just one second bare metal scraping after starting when 2 days in the garage.

what could I try to figure out where it is coming from?

The metal scraping sound sounds like what I had. It was one of the wheels down by the cam belt causing it.

The metal scraping was the variator I thought. I just found out the oil for steering coulm is way down the low mark. With what oil can I fill it up?

Any other thoughts what the whirriing sound could be from?

Checked the owners manual and it does not specify any special type of oil. so I would presume any brand of power stearing fluid would be acceptable. Normally available at garage forecourts, halfords, etc.

Not too sure on your main problem, some suguestions though.

Got better or worse since having the aux belt changed? maybe changed but not tensioned correctly.

Does it only happen when the car is in gear and moving? if so possibly clutch or wheel bearing.

as previously said... cambelt tensioner, idler or alternator bearing.

Most serious thing would be on the cambelt side... If it was to fail you could be looking at either an engine / top end rebuild... it could be expensive (as I think Nino found out)!

If it's just started it may make the trip but for peace of mind I would recomend finding out the problem before goin g on a trip like this..

Hope you get it sorted... Sounds like a fab trip to make in a B

Wel were hoping for the best since we are leaving to corsica this afternoon. So the B is up to 1300km just to get there.
I'm getting the fluid from a fiat dealer asap, I don't want to fall without the power steering on my way there.

Thanks for the info given, a big maintenance will be served when the car is in back in Belgium here.

To give you guys a thought a my barchetta, never seen the coulour though.
Pic's are taken this morning after selfcarwash

Well the boat did the 3000km trip. Hehe. Now a year later, the B is up for sale. I can buy it from the owner for 2200€, witch I think is not a bad price. Is it?

One of it's faults is the strange engine sound it still makes. It did so the entire trip.Picking up the car this weekend. really looking forward to. :)

I'm taking the car to a barchetta specialist to replace next items:

-cambelt
-cambelt tenstioner
-waterpump+cooling fluid
-variator
-change powersteering fluid

I will try to change airfilter and motor oil myself. And check the engine shield
but.. She will need taken care of lots of little things in the future.
I Really hope this maintenance will solve the problem.

I've read some articles about the broken variator in witch some things can be complared like to my engine sound.
It doest abrubt come to a silence stop at 2500rpm
Soo irritating when cruuzing in 3th gear in the city. I'm getting everyone looking for shure now
