Hi All, can someone help me out. I have here a 1998 with engine code 183A1.000 according to the autodata for this year and engine code the inlet cam has 1 bolt holding the pulley on and states to use cam locking tools 1860847000. The car needed a new head gasket due to the plastic water pump impeller falling of so before I done the job I ordered the locking tool that it states to use with that engine code and year but when I pulled it apart the inlet cam has 4 bolts holding the pulley on, again in the autodata it states that the engine with the 4 bolts is a 188A6.000 from 2001 to 2006 and to use cam locking tool 187067000. It is all back together now but the problem is the engine doesn’t have any power, I have to rev the crap out of it for it to move, there is no noise from the tappets, no noise from the cam variator. Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks
Steve

I think the autodata may be wrong - I did the same job after a cam belt tensioner failure, mine is a 1996 car and has 4 bolts on the inlet cam. I will check the code of the cam locking tools I have at home for you. Did you skim the head? is it possible that the head gasket is not seated and you are getting cross presurisation of the cylinders?

Hey Steve,

THe auto data I was sent from a mate has the year put in as 1996, it says to remove crankshaft pulley bolts and the picture shows 4 bolts on it. It also says to use cam tools 1860847000 which is what I did so if your head is the same as mine, you have the correct tools.

At the bottom of the autodata it says 1996-98 engine code 183A1.000 so according to the data I followed, if you used 1860847000 you should be fine, I can scan the data I have in and email tomorrow if it helps...... Where abouts in the country are you?

Hi All, I’m in Tenerife. Yes I did have the head skimmed and crack tested. I have found the problem the valves are not seating. I took the cams out and then pump compressed air into the cylinder via the spark plug holes and it was coming out the exhaust pipe and the inlet manifold. I removed the head (AGAIN) pulled the valve out and the problems is the valve seats, the valves and seats are in good condition. I tried regrinding the valves but there is a part of the seat that is still shiny so the seats are out of line, it must have got really really hot to do this or the head is made of real bad aluminum. I must do at least 2-3 head gaskets a month and never seen the valve seating distorted

glad you sorted the problem, not sure about valve seat distortion, its not something I have come across before when an engine has overheated - but I guess as the head is aluminium, if it got hot enough then anything is possible!

How is the weather over in Tenerife? I was there a few weeks ago and it has rained since i got back, how depressing!

Just googled "valve seat distortion" and there is a lot on there about it, I think so much was skimmed of the head + the overheating, when it was put back on the re-tightening has put everything out line . I have a Honda 2.2 in the workshop that got real hot and the timing belt back cover melted but the valves and seats are fine on that. I called the owner of the car yesterday and his going mad but what do you do. The weather is brilliant, sorry to hear its raining in the UK buts that’s what it does there

Nothing you can do matey, just tell him how it is! Henk may be the place to go next barchettaparts.com

I know he has an engine on his website for 1350 euros but i think he had a cylinder head off a lower mileage one for 300 euros a few months ago as I almost bought it but then decided to recondition my own.

Its half sorted now this morning I removed all the valves, re-cut the inlet valve seats re-ground the valves, so this afternoon do the same to the exhaust valves & seats, put it all back together with new valve guide seals and I hope it'll be ready to bolt back on, I will give it a fluid text first of course. I was a little, just a little tempted to re-use the head gasket as its only been on there a couple of hours but I know I cant, the guy that works with me said "use it again, it'll be all right” There is no way Im taking the head of again !!

The head gasket normally is bonded with glue that sets when it gets warm, thus you shouldnt re-use them. Let us know how you get on!

I finished cutting the seats & grinding the valves in last night, this morning put out on the new valve guide seals, what a pig getting the old ones off. I put all four valve in number 1 and gave it a wet test, tinny little bit of seepage from number 2 exhaust valve, & even less from number one inlet. I put all four valves in number 2, just about to give it a wet test and thought I could see the inspection lamp that was on the work bench through number 4 exhaust valve so I moved the lamp and I sure could light at the end of the port, I turned it over and checked number four inlet valve and its the same, there was the light shinning through, no need to give it a wet test. The head is good for nothing, thing is I cant understand is why its done it (never had this before) & why the engineer didn’t pick up on it when he skimmed it and cracked tested it, I would of thought it would have cracked if its got so hot the valve seats has distorted
Anyone got a head for sale ????????????/

Only option really is Henk at barchettaparts I am afraid. Try looking for a Punto HGT (same engine) or maybe get adventurous and put an Alpha twin spark on it (same bottom end - not sure about valve and ignition timings though!).

Henk did seem to have reasonable carraige charges as well, it was less than I expected for the head when I enquired about it.

Thanks, is there a contact number for him & where is he ??

Thanks Again

You can find him via barchettaparts.com. He's based in Holland but delivers around the world.

I called into the engineer who skimmed & crack tested the head and he said that a hand seat cutter is not enough, if the valve seat were re-cut on the machine it would cure the problem, maybe it would but im thinking is there going to be a problem with the hydraulic tappets as the valves are sitting up higher & if the heads got that hot to moved \ dislodged the seats there’s a poss. chance that with the constant pounding of the valve against the seat they could dislodge again and fall out, I’ve had that happen before on a Toyota diesel after the head was repaired. Number 4 exhaust valve seat fell out wedged the valve open up come the piston and smashed it closed again, so it was game over for that engine
