How much is a new manifold heat shield from FIAT? Mine has started to crack and look shabby. Or is there any third party options?

Thanks

There used to be 3rd party ones on German eBay for about €25, but I can't remember seing them lately. It might though be worth a try doing a search for 'Hitzeschutzblech'.

asked fiat over here and is about 65€... i am driving without that for a year, and there are no melted parts. there is some alternative, heat proof tapes... but not sure about that. heat proof tapes

Are you talking about the water pipe on the top of the rad? Yes you can rap that in copper heat tape as I did mine for about a year and I never had any problems. The top water pipe gives off a load of heat and it's next to most replacement air intake systems.

I know :( Not only that, but it's a cheap, dirty, old air filter too :(

When the car comes back from the coachworks, I will be wrapping the radiator pipe, moving the filter and replacing it with a higher quality one.

Doc, would you be able to talk me through fitting a catch tank?

Sure its easy.

Fitting the tank in the engine bay is the only bit that takes a bit of working out. You need to find a place to mount the tank, I used the old front air intake mount that's at the bottom right of the engine bay. Once mounted just run the pipe to the top of the engine and swap it over with the OEM black pipe. Plug the pipe you just removed and the job is done.

As you can see in the picture below it's a simple job.

barchetta does not have oil cooler as standard, only water cooler...

Maybe cars sold in some climates don't have one, interested to know but UK spec cars have a water/oil heat exchanger built into the oil filter head. My old Alfa 156 had the same thing, part number 2 on the drawing below:

I will take mine out when I next get a chance as I don't need it and the oil cooler fitted. My water / oil cooler looks like it's past its best as does the pipe work for it.

One good point of a water/oil cooler is that it also actually warms cold oil as the engine warms up. Unless you thrash the *alls off your car from cold then block and water temperature will rise faster than oil temperature. The water/oil heat exchanger is just that. It transfers heat in both directions. During warm-up the extra warm oil helps ease temperature differentials in the whole engine and is thus beneficial.

The only problem with them is in race or extreme heat generation conditions where the engine could be generating more oil temperature than the heat exchanger can cope with.

The rate of loss/rise of oil temperature is fairly proportional to the excess/differential temperature at the boundary.

If you want the best of both worlds leave the water heat exchanger in place and fit (as you already have) an additional thermostatically controlled oir/air heat exchanger. Rapid lower stress engine warm-up and lubrication supported by maximum cooling when required.

Best of both worlds. ;)
