Technical Brakes

I,ve just driven from wales to southern spain a 1000+miles and I have a dreadful squealing from a rear brake ,also the wheel gets very hot I assume its a caliper sticking but someone told me it could be a wheel bearing,the sound goes when I touch the brakes any ideas before I go to the local (rubbish)dealer.

Sounds exactly like a stuck calliper to me (or possibly some debris between the disc and the pad). If it is, you'll probably have to renew the pad and the disc after freeing the caliper.

I would say almost 100% it is a stuck calliper - it happened to mine when I first bought the car. The seals perish and let road dirt and salt into the piston which turns a bit rusty. Its easy to fix and should only take an hour to do but you will need a special tool as the rear callipers are a 'piston over screw' arrangement.

You will need one of these to drive the piston home......

Don't be tempted to try and do it with a pair of long nose pilers - it does not work!

unless you use a G clamp to "gently" apply pressure in whilst
turning it

Have a feeling 1 side may be a left hand thread.

But using the correct tooling is always a better idea...

You can puncture the rubber seals if you slip with the pliers, too.... been there!

True, and if you try and bodge it back together you end up with brake fluid being sprayed around and perhaps a little fire after driving into town! Or, so my friend told me

When you remove the caliper check the brake hose first berofe dismantling the caliper. Chances are there's nothing wrong with the caliper, and it's just the hose that's clogged.
That was the case with my brakes, and the symptons were the same.

Don't have a leak but may explain why my brakes are c**p! Guess i'd better get on ebay to see if I can find a set for the next time I do mine...

Have heard from several people about clogged hoses causing problems..

Gonna splash out on a stainless braded set soon.

mine squeal too and have striped them down and all is sound, so its the cheap brakes i put on when i got the car they are rubbish when they get hot,will be changed to good ones when moneys allow !!
