Hi guys,
here is my pb if someone can help:
When I start the engine, usualy when outside it's colder I can hear a whiring sound which stops if I press the clutch pedal. When the gearshift it's in free position and I accelerate I can hear it louder, and if not it stops at idle sometimes not always. All this untill engine gets warmer. I did experienced this last winter and probably started when I changed gearbox oil - could it be too thick? During summer the strange sound wasn't present, but now that the temps are arround 10degrees outside the sound is back but not too persisten, just untill I start driving.

So, what could it be?
1) clutch release bearing - my guess
2) gearbox oil
3) some part in the gearbox
One of my friends from autoservice suggested to leave like this untill it get's worst.
Another thing - my engine oil level dropped from medium level to minimum in like 1000km. wtf???!!!! I didn't noticed major leaks, only a little oil trace near the head of the engine. but I had new headgasket changed in january.

Not sure about the sound but I've never had the oil drop at all. Even when I "forgot" to service it on time the oil level was normal.

Does the pitch vary with anything?

Does it happen all the time or just a certain revs? If it is not all the time it might be the exhaust manifold heat shield which can make all kinds of noises! Just about to remove mine as it is playing up. If it is that then it is very simple to fix.

Well, It happens when the engine it's cold and when it's cold outside. Plus that it stops when I press the clutch pedal, so I think it's not the exaust manifold heat shield. It's something related to the clutch, most probably the bearing, I think low temperatures causes the grease not to do it's job and the clutch release bearing starts to make noises. but just for few min. not for long time

I would check the oil level in the gearbox just to make sure that its not a bit low however I would guess that its the release bearing in the clutch. I replaced my clutch earlier this year as the release bearing became very noisy, its only make of plastic and thin steel so soon wears.

This morning the sound came again, but what I noticed that it's enough to press the clutch pedal just a little bit (I mean like just put the foot on the pedal and press less then half centimeter) and it make the whiring sound stop. I guess I can still use it like it is. The noise it's comming only when car is not in gear.

I would say with some certainty that its the release bearing being a bit noisy, I don't think that it is anything to worry about.....

Thnx Guys 4 replies. My guess Is also that the bearing is little bit noisy sometimes. And It can still work a long time like this. untill it gets more serious.

hello.

i have another problem with my B. between 1st and 2nd gear the gearshifter starts to move (tremble). is it normal?

sometimes have power and sometimes not. I have to push the acceleration pedal just to move, otherway will make just noizes.

sorry for my english

Erm, no its not normal but without more info its difficult to say. Can you give more detail of when it happens, do you get any noise with it, is it consistent or only under hard acceleration etc?

i'm back ... that problem disappeared... now it gots another problem...

in the morning when the engine is cold, when i drive and change the gear, while pressing the acceleration, make some constant noises like dishes noises... for few secs... and if i take the foot of the pedal... the noise disappears.

what could be?

thanks

constantin i have a simalar noise which i have never been able to explain but more of a ticking noise , same driving circumstances as yourself , sounds as if it is in the passenger footwell , which is the other side away from clutch gearbox area, been doing it now for 3 yrs never got worse

Ok, so the wiring noise was from the clutch release bearing...it's a cheap part the bearing around 15 EUR, I changed it last sunday...but hell...it's a lot of work to take down the gearbox and put it back. Now it's OK.

-ricky952, I have sometimes also some small noice in the passenger footweel when I press just a little the acceleration pedal, If I press it more it's gone. But it's not so loud the noise...also mostly when it's cold outside...might be some of the realays... I don't worry to much about that

I have this noise at the moment, I was wondering if it is the alternator bearings. I only noticed it yesterday and that is the first time I have driven the car with the roof up and the headlights and fog lights on. My theory is the extra load on the alternator is causing this and the roof being up means the cabin is quiet enough to hear it! I am going to see if I can diagnose futher in a few weeks (I am away tomorrow for 2 weeks for business)

Regards

Chris

obviously the easy test is to turn the lights off on the way home so I shall do that!
