Re: should have looked before we leaped

I have been trying to convince my wife that we should move to France but she is having none of it

We have a friend with a house just outside Perpignan, life is soooooo much nicer down there - very few Brit run guest houses and watersport businesses in that area - an industry yet to be tapped into!!

No matter how hard I try she insists on staying in cold, damp, overtaxed, overstressed Blighty!!

One day...........................

Re: should have looked before we leaped

1. either leave the wife

or

2. just arrange everything behind her back, sell the house, arrange a movers truck , arrange school, etc, etc what the french call a "fait accompli"
ok, this might result in the reverse of 1. above, but at least you've tried then

Mine wouldn't go either, when I retire we planned to get a 40' cruiser sell everything and go, but now the grand daughter is here she's changing her mind. May move away somewhere but that's another 10 yrs away

Re: should have looked before we leaped

Know what you mean Lee, I like that area too. For a while I was down there in the summer for holidays and autumn for the rally (along the cost in Spain a bit).

Sadly I haven't been for a couple of years, but we'll at least be going to Barcelona in October.

Re: should have looked before we leaped

just to remain , a word of advise, and i guess that a few expats will back me up on this:
Moving away of Blighty is not always Purple sunsets and smelling of roses, there is a big difference between going on hols somewhere and going to live and work there. The "cultureshock" is not to be underestimated.
But as long as you try to speak the (local) language, expect different types of corruption then those you get back home, and are prepared to be baffled by (local) tax laws (1) and hate by association(2ab) you'll do fine, after all people are people everywhere, even if they are "not our kind of people"

And whatever you do, do NOT go live somewhere where there are allready a lot of Brits.. you'll end up in mens-clubs and berry-pie baking do-gooders organisations where you'll spend the hours complaining that back home everything is better, that "you cant get the staff overhere", that the local Manuel doesn't speak your language and serves the beer not nearly lukewarm enough, etc.. reminensing the empire actually. Just dont, ok?! Or i'll make sure that Jeremy Clarkson becomes your nextdoor neighbour.(3)

(1) Income Tax in UK is actually a lot lower then the rest of Europe, wages are above average and you keep more of what you make. UK Indirect Tax however is scandalous.

(2a) hate by association: it was untill this day still NOT a good idea for Tony to jump in bed with G.W.
(2b) hate by association: two words: football hooligans

(3) all this should be taken with a pitch of salt, just stated for the funny angle, althou of course there is a grain of thruth in it

On the other hand......

..........don't spend loads of time thinking about it, just do it!

Best thing we ever did and from a casual comment "shall we get the hell out of here" to physically moving in to our new home here in France was just 6mths

Of course, it helps if you don't have to work and my new company car is a TRACTOR!

Re: should have looked before we leaped

To be fair, I do work a couple of hours each day keeping an eye on my UK business.

With the internet, many more people can now choose to work remotely and relocate to find a better quality of life.

I woke up a few years ago on my 50th Birthday and when I looked in the mirror, VICTOR MELDREW was looking back at me ..........

....it was definitely time to move out!

As for the tractor, no such luck - mine is a 1958 RED (LRB please note) Ferguson and it is great fun.

We also offer B&B and Fishing Holidays - http://www.chateau-marotte.com/

So if anyone wants to 'try before you buy' life in France, come over for a few days and help me clear out my wine cellar

Just being nosey but what do you do in the UK?

And as for helping out with the wine cellar, being 'between assignments' at the moment that is a very tempting proposition - but one that I do not think will float with the wife!!

Re: should have looked before we leaped

LRB - www.biker-bitz.com - we supply motorcycle parts & accessories - mainly Superbike stuff and helmets/clothing etc

ALAN D - Yes we do, but not in the house i'm afraid - but we can supply suitable sleeping quarters for them in the garage......

....on the other hand, if the dogs are better behaved than the owners, we can always reverse the accomodation

We also have a very friendly Labrador!

10% discount for FIAT FORUM users as well

Cheers

If the dogs were not allowed to stay with us then the Mrs wouldn't go for it
