To check for binding brakes is it just a case of jacking up the wheels and then spinning the wheels by hand making sure there's no friction?
Yes, first making sure that the handbrake is off and in neutral

Really though, if it was a binding brake you would only need to feel the centre of each wheel after a journey in the car to know if one of them was indeed binding. The binding wheel would be the one that you had just left a layer of skin on!!

Re: 17.8 MPG!! How come?

The flying banana has a point, if you have binding brakes you would know about it, and for the mpg to drop that low you really would know about it!!

I still think that its to do with the AFM or the exhaust sensor - only other thing that would be obvious is a faulty injector.

The theory about the temperature I can understand but think its very unlikely............

Re: 17.8 MPG!! How come?

Just to put this fuel consumption issue to bed once and for all, and to help out anyone in the future who might have the same problem, I can say it's finally fixed. It was the "temperature sender switch", got it replaced yesterday.

The consumption for the half a tank used before I took it to the garage was 19.1 MPG, which is pretty much what it's been for the past few months. Took it for a pretty long drive when I got it back this morning and when I filled the tank up I worked out I got 32.5 MPG so more than happy it's finally sorted

Excellent news!!

So, where is this sender switch for future reference and how much did it cost?

I'm not sure where (or what) it is to be honest LRB. I just left the car with DTR and asked them to do their best to fix the problem as I was sick of it! I wonder if 'sender' should be 'sensor' and was a typo on the invoice - might make more sense

Anyway they charged me a tenner for the part as they had a used one lying around, and a half hour's labour.

So that's finally sorted, now for the new radiator, the shocks, the tyre, finishing the wheels, checking the tracking, wiring up the sound system, adding the strut brace, adding the induction kit, respraying the new wing mirror, giving it a good T-cut for the scratches etc etc. Plenty to do

The list never gets smaller - trust me!!

Re: 17.8 MPG!! How come?

Good news, but I'll have to sell my shares in Shell. Still, thanks for the warning, I hope this doesn't count as insider trading

Does anyone know where this sensor is?

Jiggy, don't suppose you have the part number of the temperature sender switch to hand do you? Mine has started showing the same sort of behaviour, fine to start but not running very well once its warm! TBH I it only started yesterday and I have not had a look yet so it may be something simple but just in case............

I used to have an old B (1996). The MPG dropped after I replace the exhaust with DTR version.... I thought the sports exhaust was the cause. I got 25 MPG... After reading this post, I have just realized that I been wasting lots £££ on poor MPG.

Anyway, car sold long ago.

Shiningliao - as I mentioned in another thread, it turned out my comments a month or two were a bit premature in the end

The car was great for a day or two then it went straight back to drinking way too much petrol. I'm interested to know what it is about the DTR exhaust you thought caused your excessive fuel consumption - I mean, the ECU wouldn't "know" there's a different exhaust on there, would it (and adjust fuel/air ratio or something)? Isn't the only part of the system exhaust system that feeds back to the ECU the lambda sensor?

Re: 17.8 MPG!! How come?

No the ECU can only read from the lambda sensor / exhaust oxygen sensors and thats mounted just after the flex downpipe part of the exhaust, well infront of the middle and back box.

If you did not change the manifold and CAT then the gas flow is still restricted so I can't see it making that much of a difference in MPG.

Re: 17.8 MPG!! How come?

Got to have the Co checked to see how much fuel it's using.......then you will know if the O2 sensor or ECU needs changed/modified....
