I have a problem with my barchetta not always starting first time, if it doesn't go first time I turn off ignition and start again it usually goes on the 2nd or 3rd attempt and then runs perfectly. The fiat garage here have said its the transponder reading unit after playing with the computer for ages but they don't seem that sure, anybody got any ideas? The orange key code light always comes on inside and then goes off after a second or 2 as it should, the fuel pressure was measured and that was correct all the time. They diagnosed after entering the code via the computer several times and it always started first time when doing this.

Yes Bill I live in Bulgaria, drove my Barchetta here in July and enjoyed the drive even though it was raining most of the way, got to Croatia and the sun came out, got to Bulgaria and the car stopped for some unknown reason, now I just have this slight annoyance of not starting first time, tried the other key but it's the same.

Seriously I would have a look between the key reader and the ECU as it sounds like it's not picking up the signal to start. Occasionally when turning the key the yellow light stays on causing it not to start as soon as the light goes off starts perfectly. I wonder if the code further down the wiring is becomming garbled? therefore the light is going off but still not starting.

Maybe resetting the ECU would help?

Being a newbie to barchettas how do you reset the ecu. And best of luck when you get to Romania, think about a suspension lift and upgrade before you get there, and I hope you're lucky on the ferry if you're taking it, you might get straight on or you may wait all day.

Dissconect the battery for 20 minutes. But always keep the keys to your pocket and not inside tha car when doing that.

Bulgaria has good roads ,the main ones at least.Narrow roads but good.Romania from what i hear has very bad roads, full of holes!

Thanks for that Bill, I live in Plovdiv central Bulgaria, did the drive in my Barchetta from the Midlands to here non-stop and have to say its a comfortable car to drive.

Was in Hugary, Serbia, Romainia, Bulgaria and Turkey a couple of weeks ago, a silver BMW with 4 men believed armed tried to seperate our convoy on the road from Vraca to Sofia ending in a 50-60 mile police escort to Sofia. Other than that it was a marvelous trip :)

When you disconnect the battery it's also prudent to connect the terminals with a conductive bar (NOT ON THE BATTERY) and leave the ign on to get rid of any residual voltage left in the ecu. So I would take the battery out and take it with you if you can't remain with the car I would also use the other keys to lock it.

Hi
I was just reading your adventures, very entertaining, I'm sorry you had problems in Bulgaria, I've been here over a year and had nothing but good experiences. Did I read on here somewhere that if you reset the ecu and leave the immobiliser box unplugged that it no longer uses the system anymore but still works? If this is true which plug do you leave unplugged or is it both of them?

So I've done the reset, the car starts better from cold, recently it had needed a touch of the throttle after cold starting to get it running properly now its straight into smooth running, don't know about the starting problem yet as its inconsistent but I will let you know. Thanks

I'm one of the many, so pissed off with Tony Blair that I couldn't stand it any longer and had to leave, and it's much warmer here as well, perfect for the Barchetta.
