Tuning Upgraded air filter

Tuning Upgraded air filter

I mailed the guy's at :worship: DTR :worship: a couple of months ago for their opinion on the whole 'induction kit subject'. They were very helpful but said they do not recommend fitting an induction kit as you gain very little in the way of BHP and often upset the airflow meter in the process. Their advice was to go down the route of the K & N filter as it increases the airflow without the need for a change in setup, also is much cheaper in the longrun as you simply clean it and stick it back in at each service.

Various RR confirmed that the Punto HGT induction kit (Barchetta 1999->; thanks docorangepeel;) ) improved peak power by over 10bhp.

What I don't understand is why an induction kit should upset the airflow meter??? Having designed quite a number of induction kits I have never come across the induction kit being responsible nor have any of the competitors. K&N have for less than 1 in 100,000 sold a claims and so far not as single of these claims could be verified.

It depends on where the airflow meter is positioned, some 'B's' - mine included - have the AFM sited between the airfilter housing and the acres of plastic ducting that feed the rubber hose going to the throttle housing. To fit a direct kit the AFM needs to be re-sited between the new filter and the hose to the throttle housing, according to DTR this can upset it - I have not fitted mine yet but will let everyone know how I get on - I don't expect to have any issues and don't think it should take longer than an hour or so......

The K & N filter is a direct replacement for the stock paper element, simply take the old one out and stick the K & N in its place, only issue is you are still left with the acres of FIAT plastic

What induction kits do you have on offer, the green is a med-term measure until I can afford a CDA - or better ;)

thanks for the info littleredB.... for me the DTR opinion is the reason I need it ... clean and re install :) it really helps when the other option is wait a few weeks for outside deliveries....

Sucking in outside "cool" air is bad enough when it's 45C out there... God knows what it is under the bonnet......

Which I guess brings me to another question, especially for people in warm countries... where does your temp gauge sit??

For me with the Air Con on it seems to be just over 1/2 way ?? alot higher than I would like...... (both fans are running)!

with it off about 1/2 way... a little less on a night time drive...

With my mods I get 1/4 temp running as the norm but if I sit in solid traffic for 20 mins or more it goes just over 1/2 before the fans cut in and take it back under 1/2 in 15-20 seconds ish.

Mods:
OIL COOLER
CDA FILTER
COPPER HEAT TAPE ON THE MANIFOLD
DUAL RAD FANS FROM AIRCON B.

Interesting!I have a little over 1/4 as normal and the same as you under stop and go on traffic, same with the fans. But if i turn on the AC the temp never gets over 1/2 as the fans work almost all the time.A A/C expert says its normal for the fan to work very often with the AC on,can anyone verify it?

When I had the green cone filter on my car I got more like just under 1/2 running as norm but the temp went up and down loads more in stop start traffic.

The big change was after fitting the oil cooler in normal running and the other is the engine cools loads faster now it has the two aircon rad fans in traffic.

I had to change the fans as in the aircon B, one fan has a few speeds and works with the aircon and the other is for the engine. As I dont have aircon I had to wire them up to run together. It works great but the car will now suck in small children and cats and dogs if it gets hot in traffic heeheh (y)

I am about to change my water hoses to samco and fit a new water pump as well as replace the coolant so I will let you know if I notice any diff.

A fan in the oil cooler would be any profit? It needs space(i think) to fit but will it work?It can start working when the rad fans start.

Too much trouble to fit?Stupid idea?

I think your oil cooler mod is going to be moved to the top of my things to do list Doc. Have checked out the info on your web site :worship: and will be giving the guys at think auto a call

I have the 2 fans fitted and have checked that they are both working and have no cats, dogs or small children stuck in the intake but the the outside air temp is currenly at 45C during the day, god knows what it's like under the bonnet !!

Fortunatley i'm going to be away for the worst of the summer so it will give me some time to get everything ordered / delivered :)

I used to have a desert rat called Rommel once...:) Not that that's got anything to do with anything

I think I may have eaten Robot's father when I was in Estonia, but to go back to temperatures......

Mine runs at a quarter, even in thirty or so degrees. It goes up to half when I sit in traffic.

I've got the CDA, but a standard fan and no air-con.
