Technical KPH to MPH help

I m not sure if you swap the plates if the needle will give you the correct reading. This issue has been discussed before but I cant help much. Have a look at a thread that was something like import to spain. I think the issue was MPH -> KPH. might help.

QUOTE (Alan.D)

There is a converter that can be attached to change the speedo from Kmh to Mph although you do get to keep the scale so mine has 240mph on the clock The converter also changes the mileometer to Miles so take note for correct milage of the car the first 56,000 in the clock was kilometeres the next 20,000 has been in miles so has a total milage of 53,000 miles although it shows 70,000 odd.

UNQUOTE

the next question i have is.........where can you get the converters and how much are they? as for the speedo readings i can just buy an after market one cant i????

Ever considered repairing the one you have? how hard could it be?
May be dust or some loose contacts. Take the panel out, open it up, clean it, push all connectors in tight and clean the contacts a bit.
Might save you $$$ and trouble.
Plus, the problem might be elsewhere ( I really hope not ).
There is a chance that the pulse reader has failed, thus no reading sent to the panel. So I would recommend you start from what I said before.

Funny you mentioned BMWs Alan,
It was my BMW that had the same problem which I sorted out with cleaning :)

already taken the unit out and followed the instructions how to fix the mile counter reset button (as it poped out)....cleaned the connectors with brasso as they looked a little dirty and cleaned outthe unit as best i could. Also the clear plastic it cracked and one or 2 of the plastic mounts are broken :-(

Have already found a KPH speedo from doogal that i am picking up tomorrow along with maybe a few other bits.

Need to find out where on earth you buy the converters from :-S

I run a 7 series website so probably know that car, esp the e32, better than any other. Certainly a lot better than I know the Barchetta

you can find some proper nice 750IL V12 (with 40k on the clock) with all the toys for 12-15k

however service and MPG is a killer!!!!

proper PIMP cars

proper PIMP cars

Oi :nono: tickedoff.gifknuppel2.gif

plus you can find them much cheaper than that, i doubt the consumption is much worse than the barchetta as they are averaging 20-25mpg these days much more on the motorway. Servicing isn't that bad either except 2 spark pugs that you need to remove the Aux water pump to get to.

Anyway back to the Barchetta :)

So just to clarify:

The way the KPH to MPH conversion works is to leave the Speedo and Odo untouched, but introduce a module in to the cabling so that the pod receives fewer pulses, thus reducing the movement of the Speedo needle and Odo.

The conversion doesn't work by replacing the facia behind the speedo needle.

Is that right?

That's exactly the situation with mine.

My speedo was faulty. It only worked intermitantly and cleaning the contacts made no difference.

I replaced my binnacle with one with an MPH speedo. I had to remove the little module that was spliced into the speedo pulse feed.

Thanks John, very useful info.

I guess the disadvantage is that you end up with a speedo that goes up to 240mph, meaning it's highly unlikely you'll ever use more than half the sweep, and only occasionally use more than a third of the sweep of the dial.

One other thing that is rather weird: the two speedos are actually calibrated differently, in other words 170Kph is at noon on the Euro speedo, and 190Kph is at noon on the UK Speedo - does that mean that UK cars are faster? ;)
