Fiat traditionally set list prices significantly higher than the true value of the car to allow plenty of headroom for advantageous trade in offers and finance deals.

25% off list would by no means be unusual; plenty of surplus new cars get moved on with that level of discount or more, through various channels.

Whatever, that car in AL D's link seems well overpriced to me, with that mileage, forecourt main dealer book would be around £7750.

it does make you think

It makes me think that anyone buying a high end Panda for list and selling it on 3 years later after having used it very little is going to lose a frightful amount of money. Sold for cash to the trade, you'd likely be offered around £6600 for that car. That's over £2/mile in depreciation .

Now TA 4x4s are 3 years old plus, secondhand naturally the way to go as someone else has had all the depreciation. I guess the Orange 13 plate will attract someone simply based on mileage. I've seen a lot of fairly high mileage cars of the same age. I just have the feeling you could get 3 or 4 happy years out of it before it caught up as it were (still doesn't make it great value though I agree).

Back to JR Kitching's other point, I had a new Panda 1.2 previously. Thanks to a very generous discount of a third (and 0% finance), I really didn't lose that much money later. Which is why I couldn't bring myself to consider a new 4x4. 3 year residuals were about 37% I think. So a 31 month one with 8k miles was perfect for me.

It's a very basic one too. Plastic steering wheel, basic air con, no split folding rear seat, no tinted windows and I guess no heating screen.

I'd want plenty extras which I think a lot of second hand ones miss as the dealers never order their own stock with any.

Yeah these little fellas are for relatively modest money at the mo: I paid just shy of £12K for a brand new (not pre-reg) Cross TA Tuscany Green with Winter Pack a few weeks ago.....thought I did OK.....but maybe not all that good after all!!
