Croma Induction kit

Croma Induction kit

I've had one of these in mine for the last 3 years...

I also had one in my last two cars - I love em. I don't think it makes it any faster, but I'm sure it makes it livelier - when you rev it, it picks up instantly instead of building up to it.

I don't understand the whole induction kit thing. The stock air filter box takes outside (cold) air in, whereas that would be taking warm air from under the bonnet. Don't you get more expansion (therefore power) from colder air?

There's also a sound baffling flap inside the air box that you can remove - this also opens its throat up so it can breathe properly.

It also lets out the beautiful turbocharger song. Pensioners often head to their air raid shelters when I drive past.

You're right in thinking that cold air is best. I am running a modified stock air box as the power gains are usually better than after market air filters (as proven in a group test by performance car magazine) and it doesn't cost anything. Plus it saves me having to relocate the ECU that lives on the housing.

Sounds great. Do you have a photo with your air box after removing this flap ? Is that plastic wall in the middle of the box ? I use regular filters, never used K&N but if you think its worth it i`ll get one too. Thank you. :)

Basically Rob, you drill a number of holes on the inlet side of the filter. I used flat wood bits, 12mm and 20mm if my memory serves me correctly. On the 2.4 the feed comes into the bottom of the air box and out the top, so I drilled the bottom half so that the filter still does it's job. I left the cold feed attached because it does actually have a function. On previous cars I have removed it completely. It sounds a lot better but it you don't want it too noticeable you just drill fewer holes. On my 20v petrol it sounded mental :D
You can then fit a Pipercross or K and N replacement panel filter if you want.
The best bit is that the engine bay looks standard.

No such problems with mine - have had my K&N element on my Croma for 3 years now. I've cleaned and re-oiled it 3 times.

I read the same years ago when I put one on my SEAT. Never had any problems with that either. In fact it had to have a MAF under warranty before I fitted the K&N.

I personally think this rumour about MAFs is a load of ******** that seems to have spread all over the net by threads like this one. If a MAF happens to fail when a K&N is fitted then the K&N gets the blame. MAFs fail all the time, far more often with paper filters fitted.

The air is pulled upwards through the filter. The element shouldn't be dripping wet anyway, but it isn't going to drip upwards. If any does drip down then it has to get through the filter to get into the airways, which it can't.

They're very good. Paper filters work by obstructing the air so the bits can't find their way through. The K&N can be much more free-flowing, as it uses the stickiness of the oil instead of just obstruction. They're also very well made - a cotton filter with a very fine wire mesh on either side. They wash very well too.

I just took out the deflector flap inside the box. I tried to unclip it but it snapped out - they're pretty awkward clips to try and free. It's the flap that snapped though, not the air box.

Honestly the turbo sounds lovely with a K&N and no flap in the box. It's not really loud, just a lovely zooming noise. I'm no yobbo and I like it anyway.

The cleaning and re-oiling costs about the same as a paper filter. So you don't save any money, but it doesn't cost anything more than the one-off cost at the start.

You need about 2/3 of one of these every clean. I do mine about every 9 months-ish, when there's a nice sunny day to dry it after its wash...

Personally Dave, I don't think you'll get any takers at that price. If you put it on auction with a reserve, it may well go past £70. In my experience (almost 900 feedback) items don't move very well when the starting price is so high. Bring it to Brooklands, you might get some takers there (y)

I've just done a very quick search on the net and Amazon are selling the same filter kit for £87 delivered!!

does this fit the stilo jtd too? now i have never oiled a cone filter and have run them for the last 10 years+, i have been toying with junking teh airbox on my 1.9 stilo and making up a nice silicon path with a cone filter and then fitting a catch tank to replace the one that is one the air filter box would make chainging the filter extremely quick too

I didn't know you were pimping your own stuff, thought you'd just spotted it.

Be a man and stick it on for 1p start, no reserve. I just did that with my old laptop - it went for £240-odd in the end.

You'd certainly get more than 4 watchers anyway. My current no reserve 1p auction of another PC currently has 63.
