Returning from a shopping trip to Swindon earlier, was caught up by a 2011 MINI. Young couple, car loaded to the roof with stuff. Camping gear, bedding, or similar. I doubt they'd just bought it in the sales.

Probably been said already but I think a very real hidden cost of this pandemic is going to be the metal well being of everyone once things settle down a bit. My wife and kids are literally going stir crazy at the moment with being holed up homeschooling and working from home.


The wife is getting out a little bit after she finishes work but it's only to go and check on her dad who recently had a stroke so not really a relaxing situation. The time of year doesn't help as it's dark by the time I get home so we can't go out for a walk. Plus we've only just moved, my mum is constantly in and out of hospital through illness so we've got the worry of that on top.

I know I'm far from the only one with issues but it's not going to be too long before people start to crack

I think there can be little doubt about that. In fact I have one family member who is giving me slight cause for concern at this time.

For myself I "sorted" myself out in my mid to late fourties. I think I was having a mid life crisis? I thought that, in nearly all respects, everything in my life had an aspect of there being "greener grass" on the other side of the fence. Beware if you start feeling like this, it's a very dangerous place to be.

Then, quite suddenly and, to me, out of the blue, my friend, who'd been my best man at our wedding, had an affair and his beautiful wife found out. Everything went pop! and he ended up divorced. This seemed particularly shocking as they were part of our closer group of friends - we'd all knocked about together for years before most of us got married off to one another. Almost from that moment I started thinking "You've got it made son! - a beautiful wife who has stood by you all these years. Cracking children who are not giving you too much aggro. A steady job bringing in enough money (which at that moment I wasn't enjoying too much but did help towards the pension a lot). A reasonably nice car. and so on and so on. My strategy if I start feeling disenchanted, depressed, unsettled etc is to just think of all the good times we've had and all the nice stuff that goes on in my life. "Always look on the bright side" in the words of the song (and I have been known to sing it quietly to myself)

So, if things aren't going too well with you, try counting your blessings and look around to see if there's someone in worse straights than you then give them a hand if you see a way to help, you'll feel a lot better for it and your own problems will diminish when you see some of the catastrophic situations of others.

We all have a story, and some seem to manage better than others. Stating the obvious, this pandemic has blown things right out of the water so to speak. We will handle things/situations in our own way. I consider myself a survivor and I’ve said before due to my strict upbringing, I can still switch off and go to a better place. I mentioned I’m having these dreams lately, truth is I wake up in a panic, they are bad dreams and they are so real. I’m trying to laugh these off but it’s getting harder, I do think we are lucky we have a strong family bubble.

Its the youth and the COVID kids that my wife thinks who will come out of this the worst unfortunately. In lockdown young kids are open to all sorts of things, abuse and cruelty up there. My wife is a professional in such matters. Parents/parent who are not handling the lockdown very well for a number of reasons will generally take it out on the kids. Drink,drugs,not getting fed properly, not getting cleaned properly, long periods of neglect, the list goes on, frightening.

Not the things you want to hear is it? Unfortunately these are facts.

Half hearted effort from gumtree, 90% of the stuff on there is non essential but they only choose to get rid of health and beauty only.
