Hi, I just had an new alternator and battery installed on my Punto grande. The drive now feels a bit juddery. It is not as smooth as it was. Before alternator fail I had lost power and had to drive a few miles stop and starting literally. Would this have had any effect on the engine? Thanks.

Hi. It is possible.

Did you get any warning messages?

Probably worth disconnecting the battery overnight.

Letting ECU revert to Factory settings..
As it may have picked up some daft stuff with the bad alternotor dropping boltages to sensors.

Best to do is hook an OBDII reader and check/clear error code(s). Multi Ecu Scan does that job perfectly and is really worth the money !

Hi, thanks for replies. The garage I went to was a small mechanic with one car lift. I don't know did he do the timing right. I will contact him again though. Once again thanks for advice.

Hi yes I had only alternator changed. I contacted Garage and they said that it was highly unlikely that shuddering drive was result of alternator change. The car engine has 114,000 miles on it so it is not great condition. I will leave car into Garage next Tuesday and they will check it out.

I might have buggered up the engine myself driving it when alternator was gone. The car stopped and I had to walk to a nearby garage to get a portable battery. Horror day. The alternator looks good that they installed so it is nothing to do with this- the engine is shuddering. Not good, on a Fiat Punto grande with 114,000 miles. I will bring car in on Tuesday fingers crossed nothing too big!

I cant see how you have done anything wrong..cars can be tempremental.

Are you local with anyone with car diagnostic equipment?

When was it last serviced?..could be plugs and/or leads..maybe even a coil pack BUT..it could be a lot of things..

Curious as to where you live...

Hi I live in Dublin, Ireland. Reading some posts it could be HT leads or spark plugs.

I would suggest its a good starting point..if the cars new to you then do it..I use Euro Car Parts online store. Put your reg in and take your pick, apply the current discount code and away you go.
If your going to buy leads DONT buy the cheap ones. They fell apart when I tried to fit some recently. Prospark are a different league in terms of quality.

They MAY have disturbed the crankcase sensor when doing the belt job …

Hi thanks reply- what is the crankcase sensor and where it located?

One more thing I don't have an Abarth Fiat Punto, it is a Mk2 one- 2006.

That's the sensor that tells the ECU the engine position, relative to TDC, located near the front crankshaft pulley

Cheers, Bernie
