Tuning Esseesse KIT

The kit should include, a new larger Garrett turbo to replace the tiny IHI one and fuel rail with bigger injectors from the Punto Abarth, BMC drop in air filter and a remap to suit. Plus drilled discs, lowered spring, wooden crate etc etc

Yes you can replicate the power output by simply remapping, but you don't have the benefit of the larger turbo and long term durability testing that Fiat would have done to construct the kit.

The cars are to new at the moment to see what, if any, premature turbo failures happen from the increased boost and therefore heat that they are producing.

Larger turbo will not have to work as hard to produce the power as a smaller turbo will. The smaller turbo by virtue of working harder may produce more heat and although can replicate the power of the larger turbo, may not sustain it on long hot summer drives, or track work etc as the induced heat causes power to drop off.

The SS upgrade for the GPA did include a change to a Garret turbo but on the A500 the IHI VL37 is left intact.

On the current motor I'm very impressed with the IHI VL36 (MiTo 155TB) and it seems more muscular than the one on the A500. AutoLusso seems to have had good success with hyprid turbo conversions on the IHI but unsure as to how 'the life' of the turbo is shortened.

Are there any advantages of the IHI over a Garret e.g. does the IHI spool up quicker ? Looking at replacement prices the IHI is cheaper than the Garret yet some refer to the IHI as being a premium turbo.

Of course you are correct the 500 SS is just a remap the GPA was the new turbo. I was thinking about the Tributo 500 which gets the Garrett as did the Trofeo Race cars.

On a side note I did notice a Jan 2011 2700mile Tributo for sale for £24k near 16k of depreciation or nearly £6 a mile!!!

The IHI turbo is not premium compared to Garrett, otherwise it would cost more as you found out.

In theory the smaller turbo may spool quicker but it will also run out of puff quicker and heat the intake more as it chops the air more. Although boost is often referred to as just the pressure produced i.e. 1bar, it's also the volume of air moved at that pressure that counts and bigger turbo has more volume.

Though the Garrett is still small in relative terms compared to big turbo's like GT28RS etc etc

The turbo also needs to be matched to the intercooler.

Too much pressure across the intercooler will cause the temperature to increase (gas laws)

We ran into this problem with Group N racing Escort Cossies. Fit the homologated larger turbo and they went slower as the larger intercooler wasn't homologated.

Cheers

On the North American A500 they have 2 smaller sized intercoolers to go with the Garrett turbo and that's been 'downtuned' to 160bhp to 'save' the gearbox. Unsure if it's one or 2 intercoolers on the European A500 / A500SS. On the MiTo / GP some have fitted a larger intercooler like the one that Forge sell - given the extra bonnet area in comparison to the A500 it 'easily' fits.
