Evening,

It never rains but pours! Leaky rocker gasket on my 500f and now clutch problems with my 850!

Could be one for Timmy.....
Coming up to a roundabout, shifting from 4th to 3rd nice and easily and all of a sudden the pedal felt weird. All the way home shifting was tricky and when I stopped finding 1st gear and reverse to manoeuvre into the garage was an ordeal, in the end I pushed it in.

Messing about what I discovered was that if I pushed the pedal in about 3/4 of the way in things were normal but if I fully pressed in the pedal crunching and grinding started. I dont want to particularly use it in this way as obviously it goes against everything we've learned!
Is there anything in there that may have slipped or twisted?
Going to look at it tomorrow with a fresh set of eyes and possibly look at cable adjustment.....longshot but maybe.

I have no history of the clutch ever being done, have the car 10 years and about 3000 miles, most of that's been done in the last year as my industry has been closed due to covid.

As always, I hope everyone is safe and well!

Sounds like it may be the clutch release bearing, but normally they start making noise as soon as the bearing touches the fingers of the pressure plate.

Thanks pal, not getting any strange noises or anything out of the ordinary. Clutch seems to work and gears appear to be engaging but only when you push the pedal in 3/4 of the way.

Hi FR85

It sounds like it may be an issue with the linkages and pivots at the front of the tunnel just where the cable reaches the front of the tunnel. its under an inspection plate held on with a single 10mm headed bolt but its right underneath the heater under the dash,

there is also a plate on top of the gearbox that the cable sleeve fits into and these can bend slightly causing less cable movement,

While you are under the car check that the gear lever connection to the gearbox (the lollipop thing) is not unduely loose as this can stop you engaging 1st and reverse.

i hope this helps

So, got stuck into it this evening.
Pulled the front inspection cover on the tunnel, all seems ok in there, very little pulling on the tunnel.
Checked where the cable goes into the tunnel from the box, again all seems fine, not rusted through nor has it sawn itself.
Checked the cable carrier, all good.
Adjuster too seems fine.
Pulled the flywheel cover and no metal fell out and it looks to be moving as it should.
Going to check and tighten the selecter tomorrow.

Baffled to say the least, strongly thinking bout finding the sweet spot on the pedal and putting a position stop on it until something else presents itself.....

So today has been a good day!

Took out the cable, oiled and freed up the adjuster. Then went to the pedal end, the clutch pedal always rode high in comparison to the brake pedal and the size 10's were always fighting in the foot well. I put a nut and locking bolt on the pedal stop, brought it in line with the brake pedal and then adjusted the cable and hey presto, all back to normal, better then normal infact, with everything oiled it's silky smooth!
I also braced up the tunnel with some small threaded bar to reduce any movement as I'd read this area is prone to flexing.
Not straight from the factory I grant you but mobile!

I also managed to seal and the rocker cover on the 500 so I went from no Fiats this morning to two this evening!

Thanks everyone for your input, super forum!
