Hi everybody - I have accidently mixed up the order of the spark plug leads going into the distributor (or dizzy for our American friends). Does any body know the order - I have tried various combinations but I can't get the engine to run smoothly. I know the firing order is 1342. Does any body know which lead goes where? I'm slightly embarrassed at having to ask the question - be grateful if anybody can help. Thanks in advance.

Hi Tom, I attached an image of the ignition connection from the electrical service manual I found. Maybe that will help?

Hi Tom

The cap may have numbers cast into its surface so search for that first

Otherwise

its uncertain if over 50 years someone before has moved them around so lets go back to basics.

1 Turn the engine anti clockwise until the timing mark on the end pulley is 10mm to the right of the timing bark on the timing chain cover.

2 Take out spark plug no1( nearest to you) and place a piece of garden type hose over the plug hole and blow into it.

3 a If you can blow air easily into the cylinder then you are currently in position to fire cylinder no4

3 b If you can not blow easily into the cylinder then you are currently in position to fire cylinder no1

4 take the distributor cap off and see which lead the rotor arm is pointing towards, refit the cap and with ref 3a or 3b connect the lead from the distributor to the plug from your results from 3a or 3b.

5 as viewed from above the distributor turns clockwise so the next lead clockwise on the distributor cap will go to the next plug in order
as 3a 4213
or 3b 1342
continue fitting the leads in this order

6 then start the car in the normal fashion, hopefully this should give you the correct result

Tim
