850 no charge warning light

Hi Folks

I've found a couple of metal boxes under the dash of my 1973 850 Spider attached to the bulkhead and am wondering what they are. The car is LHD and the boxes are to the left of the steering column.

Unfortunately the forum software will not allow me to post a picture.

My problem is that the no charge warning light does not go out despite there being `13.9v with the engine running.

There is a red/yellow wire from the alternator that goes into the box on the left and another wire that goes from this box to the warning light.

The boxes are not mentioned in the official workshop manual.

thanks

Re: 850 no charge warning light

That looks to be the battery charge indicator relay. I've attached an image of the charging circuit diagram from the 850 electrical shop manual.

Re: 850 no charge warning light

Great. Thanks

Sorry for the tardy reply but I didn't get an email to tell me that I had a response.

Is it possible to check the relay? and do they tend to fail?

John

Re: 850 no charge warning light

It should be possible to check the relay - you would need a 12V power supply and some jumper wires. With it removed, you could wire it up to activate it and then use a multimeter to check if it activates the relay path correctly.
