as a first little tune up before engine swops, i was thinking of putting a spare coupe head/carb/exhaust onto my '68 600d engine, is it worthwhile? any change to compression ratio?, i was wondering if the combustion chambers on the 850 head were bigger, therefore dropping the comp ratio..ie a bad thing.

any thoughts on this little tune up idea?...(im still looking for a 127 engine but thats a rare item in malaysia......)

From what I recall from the Abarth books you cannot put a 850 head on a 600 block...
1 - engine rotates a different way
2 - the 850 engine is slanted more than a 600 so the block is thicker on one end
That is what I recall.
I have a RHD 1957 600 from NZ and an 850 head transplant would be great because I already have 2 850 engines.

It's ages ago since I played about with 600s and 850s but as far as I remember:

The 850 head will fit the 600D block; direction of crankshaft rotation doesn't matter as the valves are in the same place and you're keeping the 600 camshaft; but compression ration will be lowered significantly - 850 engine (I'm assuming not an 850 Sport of 903cc - you say "coupe", which could be 843 or 903) is 10 per cent bigger than 600D so for given compression ration 850 combustion chambers are 10% bigger than 600's - if it's an 850 Sport Coupe head the ration will be dropped even more, by almost 20% - you could probably have the head skimmed.

You'll loose power. Whatever punch the motor had will probably be lost unless you skim the head or block.
