Hello, i'm hoping someone can help me with my car issues.

I have a Fiat 500x 1.4 Multiair 4x4 cross plus. Recently my check engine light, start stop unavailable light and driver mode unavailable light coming on at random times and then turning themselves off at random times.

Today i finished work, got in my car and started to drive, after about 10 seconds my engine light and the start stop light came on and i had the added bonus of my gears getting stuck in gear 5. I stopped the car (when i could) and turned it off but then i ended up getting stuck in gear 4. I managed to get home and left the car for about 30 mins to an hour. After this i turned the car on, my gears were no longer stuck but the engine and start stop lights were still on.

Has anyone had any experience with these issues?

I have taken it to a garage (not fiat) and a error code came up (It was long and i can't remember it) but it was not the sensors :(

Any recommendations welcome!

Thanks :)

I had a similar problem twice with my 2.0 MJ AWD 9 sp auto. On the first occasion it happened on a French motorway when I stopped for fuel. It took 24 hours to return to normal all by itself, no fault codes stored. The second time it happened the AA man diagnosed an under-charged battery. He cleared the fault codes and never again did it reappear, nor did it ever need any remedial work (apart from a new battery) Quirky things these 500Xs.

Battery condition and connectivity is of paramount importance with modern cars and the 500X seems to be one of the proofs of this.

This is not relevant for today's cars but I remember (I think it was my 600D or Strada 75CL traditional carb and coil setup) that in the winter months and being poor then the battery would struggle sometimes to turn the engine and get a good spark at the same time. I solved this problem with a small second 12V battery that could power the ignition coil when starting. Even when the crank turnover was about to die there was always plenty of umph for the spark plugs.

It would make sense in a modern computerised car to run all the critical control systems from say a 9V regulated supply. All the power stuff can be full 12V to 14.5V. Decent regulators will certainly manage to give 9V from a 9.5V (or less) input. But if one is going that far then one might as well for the whole way and have a 12V booster switch mode power supply that delivers a steady 12V from an input as low as 6V.

But as we know cars are made to a budget (not that a booster would cost that much) and of course where do you put it as space is now also at a premium.
