Looking to buy a 500x.

I am a bit nervous about the 1.0L being a bit hard work compared to the 1.3L.

anyone got any particular experience of either?

appreciate one is manual and the other automatic but i am struggling to find a 1.3l to drive locally.

Think it depends on what you want from the car.

I can't comment specifically on the engine choices you're looking at. I have a 1.4 turbo cross plus 4WD which unfortunately you can't get in the UK anymore. As the 170hp version with (unsurprisingly) lots of grip it's actually pretty quick by small car standards

The cynic in me says that the salesman has some 1.0s in the compound that will help his quota! Its a manual, of course, so it could be he prefers a manual.

I don't think its a problem having the 1.0, its got enough go.

Ultimately you need to drive one with the 1.3 Auto and decide for yourself

I was exactly in the same position, but having driven both back to back on country lanes etc, the 1L was absolutely fine. Its great on the motorway also. depends what kind of driving your doing? I wasn't a massive fan of the auto box, but the 1.3 did have a little more poke. We have come from a 165 bhp Abarth so we had that to compare it to!

OP was a little concerned about the 1L engine being hard worked.

There is merit and value in this question and concern so maybe other factors have to be considered.

In time manufacturing component quality, tolerances, development etc. have meant that 100hp/L is reliably achievable. There is no engine design that has never failed.

What is more important is the trade off between engines with a reliable powerful "buzz box" and an engines that "offer power and torque".

These two factors have long been opposed to each other till we/they introduced variable timing. Fiat's MultiAir technology has certainly changed that balance and allows small high power engines to deliver greater torque than traditional "fixed" engine induction dynamics.

Based on reports in this forum and else where the 1L Sport engine is a competent engine for all drivers.

I do have one reservation and that is in "towing" ability. Generally engine cc = more tow ability. (like for like turbo or no turbo).

I love Italian small cc engines to deliver that x-factor. This has been a stable equation coupled with the Italian factor for many year.

Bottom line is go and test drive (extended if you can get it) and form your own opinion about how the car performs to your driving style and expectations. You will/have to be the final decision maker BASED on your driving requirements (normal, sport, towing, ...)

I've driven the turbo engines they put in these days.... I ended up going with a low mileage 2016 with the Chrysler 2.4...it seems to have much much more power than the turbos, I wish they kept using them. Supposedly some of them had an oil issue, but I don't see any problem,my little 2016 hauls butt.

The renter 1.3 made me like the Sport. In the end I went for a 1.0 manual just because I like manuals more than I need the extra 30 horsepower… and both engines are powerful enough.

The 1.3 is a rocket and I doubt that most people will find it underpowered. It may be different if you’re towing a caravan etc. but the beast really shifts.

The 1.0 is marginally less shifty but there are six gears so there’s no reason to bog down. I’ve never felt like I needed more power.. lightly loaded it’s very spirited and accelerates quickly without needing too many gears.

Heavier it’s more leisurely but if you’re loaded up you don’t usually need warp speed on tap. It still accelerates well.. since it boosts from low revs… you’re just more conscious that you’re hanging into gears a bit longer rather than it’s slow or leaves you waiting for it to gather speed, like an old style “small engined car”.

I don’t think you would have any issues with the 1.0ltr. It makes more power than a 1.9 JTD (back in the day) and I would say its quicker than the latter (based on my old Stilo at least).
