As the weather got colder, the props holding the liftgate basically stopped functioning to the point that the gate came down on my head a couple of times while I was unloading stuff. I had to replace them with cheap non-original (but perfectly working) ones.

So my question is this: Should I just throw the old props out, or maybe there is a way to "reanimate" them somehow?

I would simply replace with new props. May be possible to have old ones re-pressurised but frankly not worth the trouble or expense.

The struts are gas-filled, so once a part of the gas has gone, they're always going to be a bit weedy.

Cold weather reduces the gas pressure, so that's when the bootlid lands on your noodle most often. New struts is the only cost effective cure. It's worth keeping the inner rod very lightly lubricated and give it a wipe from time to time, to keep grit and dirt out of the seals.
