Mileage is just short of 47,000 miles on a 2015 2.0 MJ Cross Plus 4x4. The rear hubs have suddenly (both) developed a light, tinkly noise. The noisy is NOT audible in the car during normal driving, but is easily heard when getting in or out of the car or rocking it from side to side.

I booked it in to my local dealership and the recommendation came back to strip and clean the back brakes, which I duly authorised and was carried out. The net result of this was to make the noise louder. The technician is adamant that he has checked everything and all is in order.

The only time I have experienced anything similar was on an Escort where the springs holding the front pads used to rattle as the pads wore down.

Has anybody else experienced the same or suggest any alternative expoanation?

I thank you.

I had a similar problem on my Tipo, I could hear something tinkling away when driving in a confined space with the window down (like a multistory car park), couldn't hear it when driving down the street normally even with the window open.

Turned out to be the collar of a couple of the locking wheel nuts was jingling against the actual nuts, stuck some grease in there a few months ago and hasn't been a problem since.

Perhaps worth a shot as it's something you can try yourself in no time.

That does sound very similar, thank you

I had exactly the same thing on my Tipo. It was the collar on the locking wheelnuts. If you take the chrome cover off and tap the nut it makes a tinkling sound. It drove me mad when driving with the window down at slow speeds over bumpy roads. Cured it by putting a dab of silicon on the collars stopping the collar from spinning.

I'm becoming more convinced that's exactly what it is. Car is due a service in 10 days but no faults have been found which only really leaves the locking wheel nuts. In other news, I can't believe 50k has come round so quickly, I've really done a lot of miles this year and the car hasn't missed a beat. Really impressed.
