Hi, I recently bought a new fiat 500x lounge model 2015. It has keyless entry and keyless start but now it is acting as if my car has a dead battery. The key fob won’t open the doors but the manual key will but because it has electronic start it won’t pick up that the key fob is in the car to start the engine. I can’t work out if the battery is dead on the car or whether it is just a key fob battery that’s needed or something even more sinister! Does anyone have any info with this?

I believe that the battery in the key fob is to only let it work as a remote by using the buttons on it. The other function of opening the doors and turning the ignition on is a passive function. It could be your car has a battery problem, one of the most reported ones are the battery connections being loose.

What do the headlamps do, are they bright and if you try to start the car do they dim.
My car has the keyless system and in the 3 years I have owned the car has not been a problem. The system detects where the key is, for instance if you have left the key in the car it is impossible to lock the doors when leaving the car.

Sorry I cannot be more helpful than that.

I can assure you that isn't correct. The dealer managed to lock the keys in the car while valeting it. Apparently the sensors face out and if you lock the car with keys inside they may not be detected. I had to go to collect it with the spare key and take the mick out of the dealers. But the keys were definitely locked inside the car, in a cup holder.

ltaylor, sounds like the key fob has a dead battery.

If the battery is ok, then its possible the previous owner disabled the keyless entry from the configuration options (via the display unit).

When my battery died I couldn't open the car with the fob, had to take the key out and do it manually.

But then again if the fob battery dies that's an issue too. I had my car serviced and they said it needed changing, a quick and easy task.

What I'd suggest in the first instance is replacing the fob battery, I cant remember if it's a CR2025 or CR2032, just open it up and replace with a quality Duracell or similar and it should last for 12 months or so.

500X will normally warn on the instrument panel when a fob battery is getting low.

Now the annoying thing is that if you are on holiday or you and your travelling mate/partner/wife/..... both have a key then it does not say which fob is low. And then the fobs warm up while travelling and the low battery recovers a little extra grunt so the warning may not reappear for 24 hours or more.

I agree it looks like a dead key battery. It isn't too expensive to swap out so perhaps just try that.
