Technical Aircon Shock

Technical Aircon Shock

There was some good news. Collected the car this afternoon and the bill (including pollen filter and antibac)? £143 rather than £300. The reason? Apparently they remove the old gas from the unit, top it up to however much it is meant to be by weight, and you only get charged for the extra amount in the 'topup'. The £300 was the price for a full fill.

For the record I required 312 grams of gas at 14 pence per gram plus VAT. Nice and precise [emoji106]

That actually doesn't seem too bad as it includes replacing the filter too. Perhaps it's more common practice with the new gas to only charge for the top-up amount.
Interesting that they also listed "anti bac". I've performed d.i.y. bacteria killing on a couple of cars that have developed aircon smells. You simply set off a single use aerosol can in the cabin with the aircon set to the recirculate position, and leave it running for 10 minutes with the car shut up (and you outside!). Then flush through with fresh air, job done. Worked pretty well in both cases.
I wonder if that's what your dealer did?

That's exactly what they did, and at a comparable price to the cost of a 'bomb' on Am**on

That sounds very cheap. It would be interesting if you got a quote from him for re-gassing your 500X, after showing him the R1234YF label under the bonnet!

Manufacturers also specify the required amount of gas required for a full replacement and as most professional machines will totally evacuate and replace the gas then weighing of the amount of gas used is not required. Evacuate and top up to specified PSI and bill the customer for the manufacturer specified amount of gas required for a full refill.

Partial topping up does not make sense as this will not eradicate any air in the system and is thus a waste of time any money.

That's not quite what the dealer TOLD me had happened. I was told my unit was emptied and the gas measured/weighed. The unit was then refilled and I was billed for the difference. I couldn't watch it being done but a Fiat Dealer wouldn't lie would they?[emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23][emoji23] I was billed for 312g but no idea what a full fill should be.

Well that is the way they may have done it but that makes no sense because they will be losing money. If your aircon system needed re-gassing then it will have lost some gas. So then extracting what is left and weighing will weigh less than what will have to be put back in.

Yes, but I'm assuming that I got charged for a full re-gas minus what was taken out = 312grams. It was then refilled to max. If that's not what happened I'm even more confused than I was

How will they be loosing money?
Theey get money back for the recovered gas it gets sent off to be reporocseed purified ect and made into fresh gas to but used for another car

Before 134a, the gas was released to atmosphere, I still have the Rover technical instructions from a training course. When 134a was introduced, the machines then collected the extracted gas, which was measured. The refill cost should only be the amount extra to top up, this is standard practice.
Only reason to charge for a full refill is if a major leak has allowed all to escape.
