I know I have a DPF on my 2.0 MJ and I am aware of 'regeneration'. I believe there is a warning light to inform me that regeneration is taking place. However, in approx 35,000 miles of motoring I have never seen this light come on. The engine is still running perfectly smoothly, no smoke and good economy. Anyone know why I'm not seeing a 'regeneration' warning please?

From what I learnt about this on the Punto, it only regenerates if it doesn’t have the opportunity to run correctly and fill with soot by only doing short journeys.

The light only illuminates when there is an urgent need to allow the car to do a regeneration cycle.

From the 500X Owner's Manual:

"DPF CLEANING (particulate trap) in progress (diesel versions with DPF only)
The symbol switches on constantly to indicate that the DPF system needs to eliminate the trapped pollutants (particulate) through the regeneration process.
The symbol does not switch on during every DPF regeneration, but only when driving conditions require that the driver is notified. To turn off the symbol, keep the vehicle in motion until the regeneration process is over. On average, the process lasts 15 minutes. Optimal conditions for completing the process are achieved by travelling at 60 km/h with engine speed above 2000 rpm. When this symbol switches on, it does not indicate a vehicle failure and thus it should not be taken to a workshop."

Thank you both, that makes perfect sense. The car spends about 3/4 of its life at 70mph (honest) so that probably accounts for it. There certainly doesn't seem to be a problem with the car.

Alan do you occasionally get a burning smell!? If so that’s the regeneration process!! Things get quite hot when this is going on.
I believe extra Diesel is injected into engine, not 100 0/0 sure but S139 may know details!

Yes..it adds fuel as part of the 'extreme heat regen cycle.

If it is attempting a regen in traffic..it is not unusual for the radiator cooling fan to be triggefed

No, I've never noticed a burning smell or similar

I do go across country to work each day! Though some of it is on dual carriageway! The regeneration seems to occur mostly at times after I have used Sports Mode and things hot up a bit. It is a bit random tbh.
See that you drive at Motorway speeds mostly , do you keep to low revs ie Nineth gear on them or use Sport which only allows the first Eight gears to be used??
I also hazard a guess if regeneration light comes on then it’s telling you your DPF is getting to full and needs de clogging!?
I previously had a Fiat Bravo Sport 165. Same engine as this one! Had it for four years & light came on the week I was about to p/x.
Spoke with my mechanic and advised to give it a spirited drive in lower gears to keep above 2000 rpm! Light went out after 30 mins and then I went to a petrol car!?

I don't use Sport Mode often, mainly on long journeys. I suspect that the fact the car spends a good period of its life at or about 2000rpm probably accounts for the absence of a warning light

I only have experience of the Croma 2005 DPF regeneration process/details. For to 500X my keyLearn (eLearn) data does not really detail anything of interest.

Given this we for the 500X have to revert to older Croma/other post 2005 model details. These state/dictate a basic process of setting the exhaust system on fire to generate temperatures of over 550 deg.C the required temperature to incinerate carbon soot exhausted by the incomplete combustion process of a diesel engine.

One way to tell if it is regenerating is to leave the trip computer in instant consumption mode. The consumption will increase dramatically whn regenerating.
Basically the control system injects fuel on the exhaust stroke so fuel (warmed by the engine and turbo) goes intto the DPF. The DPF then "burns" this fuel using a catalyst increasing the DPF temperature to the point that the trapped soot is burned off. The early systems did this as a definite process where the engine was noticably rougher than normal. I don't know for sure but it's possible that the later systems are a bit more refined.
The other effect of injecting the fuel on exhaust stroke is some of it leaks past the piston rings and mixes with the oil in the sump. This is why the engine won't regenrate the DPF if the oil has not been changed (or the change counter as not reset properly by the garage)

Sounds like you chose the right engine for your use, Alan. Many people who do lots of short runs choose diesel, then get DPF issues.

We use the wife's petrol car for shopping and mine for the longer trips
