Just bought a 2017 500x, signed the paperwork, handed over payment, then to my surprise I only got one ‘proper’ key with remote locking etc - the spare is just a plain mechanical key. It opens the door and starts the engine, but is pretty useless except as an emergency backup - can’t open the car or the boot remotely. The dealer says this is standard for the 500x ? Yeah, maybe back in the 1990’s! Are they for real? Is everyone else in the same boat here? There’s no mention of a non remote key in the manual.

Hi. :)
Is this your 1st FCA vehicle?

Was a remote listed as an option.?

Ive not had 2 remote key on any of my 35 cars.

My 1ST 'AS NEW' Car has 2 plain keys and 2 locks. Faultless after 14 years.

First Fiat. All of my previous / other cars have had two remote central locking keys - Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, VW.

To be honest I always thought two keys were compulsory with a brand new car

My 2015 Lounge with keyless entry/start came with 2 full remote keys. As I related on another thread, I lost one and it cost me over £300 for a replacement, so worth making sure you have your proper complement of keys!
My wife's 500C just has remote locking and a key to start the engine, and the spare key is purely mechanical (with immobiliser transponder). If your spare key has the Fiat badge on it, the selling dealer is probably right concerning cars without keyless entry.

Yeah it’s got the fiat logo - just no buttons. I was worried I was being ‘fobbed’ off ? - or worse that it was a replacement and there was another remote locking key out there somewhere. If it is standard as the dealer says I guess we’ll just live with it, or cough up for another fully functional one. £300 seems steep when other manufacturers are throwing them in though!

Get a "mates rates" discount while the dealer is still keen to do the deal.. :) Otherwise, there's plenty of locksmiths who can provide a remote key, although it might be a generic style one rather than a pukka Fiat jobbie.

You may find that an additional remote (as opposed to keyless) key costs less than £300. Worth trying for some goodwill from the dealer as suggested above. We don't find it much of an issue having just the mechanical key as a spare for the 500C. If you get no joy and really want a second remote, could be worth getting a quote from Timpsons?

Yes, both of mine came with the car and carry the Fiat badge

Yep this is the reality, I tried to haggle for a 2nd key, but I'd already beat up the salesman on price, so he didn't budge, he seemed put out I insisted on a mat set, they are optional too I think from new, a 2nd key cost me £220. And I know at some point it will come in handy and save me a trip to the dealers, I think you could agree a 2nd key if you were buying brand new but less so on second hand cars, anyway enjoy your new motor,

500x keys can’t be reused they use a Megamos AES rfid that incorporates both immobiliser and remote functions in one unit. I have some new ones but there aren’t many people that can program them outside of the dealers yet and they are not easy to get hold of at sensible prices. I only stock them because I have a couple of customers that sell a lot of Fiats so need to do them to keep them happy.

So the £200 dealer option isnt bad value then..

As usual- thanks for your valued input :)
