Glad you're enjoying the Tipo (y) The 1.4 engine is actually a lower spec one than the 500X though - in the Tipo it's the 1.4 T-Jet 120bhp without MultiAir, whereas the 500X used the 1.4 MultiAir 140bhp unit. Tbh it feels like more than 120bhp to me in the Tipo. I'd prefer to have the T-Jet to the MultiAir engine though, as that MultiAir unit has been known to run into problems in the Alfa Romeo's it's fitted to, like the MiTo and Giulietta. Usually because of low oil level or leaving it too long before oil changes, but not exclusively. The T-Jet is a simpler piece of kit, which seems to be a good thing in this instance despite being slightly thirstier in my experience so far :)

The 7" UConnect screen is a far cry from the old 5" version. It's less buggy than the 6.5" version I had in my Alfa Giulietta too. The boot on the Tipo is brilliant. I barely use it but it looks like it'd take several large suitcases lengthways or sideways. Very underated car.

I didn’t realise the T Jet was different to the multi. I thought it was just a name change.Thats why I changed when 500x was out of warranty . Must admit boot is much bigger ... my dog is much happier[emoji106]

The Multiair is more complex and certainly needs the right oil. But my experience with the twinair engine, which uses similar technology, is that it will be reliable if the correct oil is used every 10,000 miles or less. Good practice for any engine of course.

I've seen some Alfa's called T-Jet or MultiAir on autotrader when they're in fact the other engine, so it's an easy mistake to make. It's testament to the T-Jet that you'd not noticed it was a lower powered engine really. I'd imagine the Tipo is slightly lighter than the 500x, but the T-Jet still feels more perky than its performance figures suggest. Will be interesting to see how your fuel economy compares to the MultiAir - I've found mine to be quite low, but I'm coming from a string of diesels so that's to be expected I suppose. You'll have a more direct comparison having owned a MultiAir :) I'll try to remember to look in the passenger footwell today to see if I have a cover under the glove box so I can report back later!

The TwinAir weirdly seems slightly less prone to problems in this regard to the MultiAir, not sure why though. That said my Sisters MiTo TwinAir had to have a new UniAir module at 10k miles whilst still on the factory oil, and it was starting to misfire again at 30k miles on the second unit - she must've been the most unlucky TwinAir owner in the Country! :p Generally though, avoiding the extra long oil change schedules and using the right oil seems to help avoid problems.

Thanks for that. The only thing I noticed with the multiair was on very cold mornings the engine was always a bit clumpy and noisy . I assumed it was the variable valves as it went away when warm and never did it on normal temp days.

I think you are comparing the performance of the 120 hp T-Jet and the 1.4 MultiAir turbo in “normal” driving mode instead of the full 140 hp “sport” mode ?

The T-Jet of course was available with a 150 hp version...

Our 500x has a noticeable jump in performance when you twist that dial !
