Hi Guys,

Iv'e had a message repeating on my Dash asking me to change the Engine Oil, how do I turn this message off?

I've read on the Net that you have to switch your ignition to first stage without starting the engine, depress the Accelerater pedal 3 times within 10 seconds and switch off...

Really...

Tried this a few times now and nothing has worked..

Further searches suggest changing the depression timing of the pedal...

OK... is there a more scientific and accurate way of removing this message because the ways described on the Net, seem pretty pathetic...

By the way, Iv'e checked the Oil myself and it's fine, just need to get rid of the damn message...

On the 500X then I think this warning can only be removed with suitable diagnostic kit.

You say you have checked the oil yourself and it is fine. Did you just check or change it?

I suspect you have a 500X diesel model if so THEN BIG WARNING. These vehicles are definitely fitted with a Diesel Particulate Filter. These filters require regenerating when the become clogged. The regeneration process is very stressful to the engine. To ensure no damage is done then the oil has to be regularly changed to ensure it is of acceptable quality. As the engine ECU can not chemically measure the quality of the oil then ECU monitors driving parameters (mileage, engine loads, rpm, start/stop cycles, etc) to calculate a degradation index. To this end the engine ECU HAS A SEPARATE OIL CHANGE RESET parameter which must be reset every time an oil change is done. This is totally separate to the Service Schedule reset which is mileage/days driven.

If the Oil Change Reset in the engine ECU then the car will not attempted to do a DPF regenerate and the DPF will clog up to the point where it can not be recovered by either a normal or diagnostic forced regeneration. The filter will then have to be professionally cleaned (if they can) or replaced. Expensive!

I said diesel above, DPF. Since September 2018 all new petrol engine cars now have to meet stringent EURO particulate emissions standards and so Gasoline Particulate Filters (GPF) will be on some petrol cars by now. These GPFs also require regenerating and again excessive temperatures are required (0ver 500 deg.C) so we will now find that new petrol engine cars will have the separate service and oil change resets.

Ive since had the car serviced, as it was due, and the engine oil was changed and the DPF reset.

It does tie you in to going to an authorised Fiat dealer for servicing and oil changes as your local independant mechanic wouldnt have the software to reset it, and the pumping the pedel 3 times option is quite frankly ridiculous...

Sound's to me like it is just another ploy from Car Manufacturers as a licence to print money as you have to use an authorised dealer for servicing and oil changes..

I've had this warning message. Two weeks AFTER my last service, I was greeted by that scary message.

I went back to my dealer and they apologised and said it was their mistake. After they changed oil, the mechanic reset the days/mileage for the next service, but forgot to reset the engine counter, which is separate from the service counter. It took them a few minutes with the laptop to get it reset and the warning went away.

Interesting... I didn't know that the engine keeps a separate count. That probably doesn't help anyone, because I don't know how to do the reset manually, but at least its something easy that a dealer can do in a few minutes.
