New X

Well, looks like we're going to be the new owners of a lovelly blue Cross plus

2017 model 1.4 multi jet from a local Fiat dealer...

Is there anything I should be checking before we hand over the money? Looks and drives perfect as far as I can tell and still has manufacturers warranty.

Is the 1.4 a reliable motor?

New X

Thatís what Iíve got although mines dented. (Still repairing it) but I love it. So far mine has had a few electronic problems but that was due to the accident that it had before I bought it but I believe the pesky electronic handbrake can be temperamental. I do find the accelerator a bit stiff.

Re: New X

I have a 1.4 auto cross bought as a pre reg car with 12 miles on the clock, just over 2 years ago now and have driven more than 20,000 miles. Pleased to report there have been no problems so far, tho' when I took it in for it's last service I was asked if there was anything wrong the garage seemed surprised when I said all was OK. Can't suggest anything to look out for as mine has been OK to date.

Re: New X

I think you must mean 1.4 MultAir? The MultiJet is the Diesel (1.6) The MA unit is fine - used in loads of other FCA platforms (Lancia Delta 3/Alfa Giulietta etc.). The early MA engines had issues with the Multair actuators but this has been resolved since in later cars and was never an issue on the 500X.

Check smoothness of clutch when cold. A couple of us have had juddery clutches. Mine is a 1.6 etorq, and after a year 18k is going well. Enjoy it !

Re: New X

I'm happy with the 1.4 MultiAir, I think it's a great little engine, has it had it's 1st service? In terms of reliability I think if it's serviced with the proper oil should be fine.

Re: New X

Yes, we have a 3000 mile 68 reg X with the 1.4 engine. Drives well etc and very comfy. Tiresome problems with radio display until which are on-going, and handbrake not always reliable when it comes to releasing on hill starts - we haven't taken this further yet... will be interesting to see if others comment. Prior to this we had 500 1.2 Lounge - brilliant in terms of reliability over 9 years.

Re: New X

My 2015 multiair just clocked up 37000 miles from new and now out of warranty. Still loving the car. A couple of issues, seat logo peeled off after a few months, then at 13 months battery failed. At 2 years outside temp sender failed which meant left hand complete mirror replaced. A couple of minor radio gremlins switch off/on etc but self sorted. At 3 years front discs and pads needed replacing. Car still looks as good as when new and paintwork still lovely and shiny. Engine is still perky especially in sport mode.

Well, we're still looking.

The one we we're going to buy didn't work out as the dealer made a mistake on the price and its now £1500 more expensive!!

Not happy

So, on the hunt for a 500X cross plus, budget of £10500

Re: New X

For that budget, you may have to settle for a slightly older one, maybe 65 plate. The only problem I had was a broken boot release button, which was quite common. It's hidden below the badge trim on the tailgate, so check everything is secure when you look at one.

No further problems after 10 months and 10,000 miles. Average of about 35mpg.

Re: New X

The Cross trim may be worth considering.

This one looks to be well equipped, as a random example.

That does look tidy, thanks for that, but I can't convince the Mrs to get a white one

So my limited choice is restricted further by colour options lol

Re: New X

Feeling slightly smug with myself as I paid less than that over a year ago for my wife's Cross Plus from Motorpoint Car Supermarket

Re: New X

We just got a white one a week ago and so far so good. We traded in a Panda and a 124Spider (I know - what!) but at least the engine is the same as the Spider had. I'm getting about 8mpg less in the heavier 500X than I did in the Spider with the same engine which I think is acceptable. Everything works fine so far. The car is amazingly quiet when compared to either previous car, and the radio is so much punchier. Ours has the 18" wheels (even though it's just a pop star) so was a bit concerned about how the ride would be - but it's perfectly acceptable. The niggles we have are
1) Seat back recline position hard to remember between drivers. A wheel would have made this easier
2) Locking the car with the button on the handle immediately after closing it seems troublesome. Seems it is okay if your fingers are not inside the handle
3) Rear visibility is rather poor - especially with the privacy glass on our car

I'm looking to try to fit a smartphone based rear parking camera - anyone done that successfully I wonder?
