Technical Thinking of upgrading your 500x Uconnect?

And I just googled out that Uconnect 8.4 uses Garmin navigation. Why on earth did they put Here in 6.5, I don't understand.

No idea, Fiat CS and dealer have both told me that they're HERE, and it's a very complicated and frustrating process, I simply won't give them the money:mad:

Having said that, I do have a problem with my present navigation and if the upgrade to the 7" provides a better solution, I may be willing to cough up the money.

So, my question still stands: What in-dash navigation does the new unit come with exactly? Who's the map data provider? Is it still the same?

The 7" HD Live UConnect uses TomTom now.

TomTom presented TomTom's state of the art connected navigation for Fiat, with FCA's all new Uconnect 7’ HD Nav and Uconnect 7’ HD Nav LIVE systems. Both the Uconnect 7’ HD Nav and Uconnect 7’ HD Nav LIVE systems were presented in the world premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. These systems will be rolled out in Europe and other markets during this year.

Available via a new 7’ HD touch screen interface that now supports multi-touch gestures and including 3D buildings in the map, this new system combines all of TomTom Automotive software products: high quality digital maps, TomTom's state of the art navigation software "NavKit", as well as TomTom's suite of connected services, including TomTom Speed Cams, Local Search, Weather, and its award-winning TomTom Traffic service.

I was really surprised when the US support told me about Here being the maps provider for the 6.5 units. I didn't expect that. Since my maps are North American and I don't have a use for them, I never actually used the navigation, so I was unaware.

Anyway, it would be great to find info on the 7" navigation. Since it's a different unit, maybe there's a chance it uses Garmin or TomTom.

Now all I can do is hope that the 7" fits in place of the 6.5 unit both physically and "mentally".

Want a laugh? My brand new Garmin has maps by Here [emoji23][emoji23]

OMG... I did some digging and learned that Garmin doesn't actually have its own maps. Initially their map data was provided by Navteq, which now is part of Here.

If it's any consolation, Here is basically the successor of Nokia Maps. I was using those for years before switching to TomTom and I can say they weren't bad at all.

Just wondered if anybody had tried a phone connected via the usb with a holder? (mine's a small magnetic jobby from Maplin which fits on the air vent).

Most of the time I know where im going, and presume most do but when im on an unfamilar route, i put on the phone, use Waze, which is free in the android store and I find it very good. Tells me the speed limit, actual speed im travelling, where all the speed camera's are, where the 50 zones are and how long they are, and as well it's easy at anytime to refresh and recalculate the best route. Versus googlemaps I find it a lot better.

To be honest, ok its not new tech but I find the 5 inch non nav works well in general. Mine never seems to lag and I do like the 5 physical buttons at the bottom.

I think in general the button to touchscreen functions are something Fiat have got right with the 500x. While in some new cars everything seems to go through a touchscreen, I've heard stories of having to go into submenu's just to adjust heating which must be mega annoying.

Sad news for me: My local dealership flat out refused to replace the unit. They say they don't upgrade hardware in case of head units, only software. Wow... just wow.

There are after-market units that will fit in the same space and there is a connector kit available on ebay that CLAIMS that it will retain the original Settings functionality but I have no experience of it and cannot vouch for it.

Will this retain the car's microphone and USB ports?

Sorry, I have no idea, but the connects.com people seem quite helpful. It specifically states that it retains the clock adjust and vehicle menu options. I'd email them direct to be on the safe side

I've had time to live with my recent uconnect update. Despite the random battery drain, there are some improvements with the version they gave me.

The traffic camera alerts are still annoying, although they are slightly less plentiful. Whereas I was getting 20+ warnings in a minute on some stretches of road, this is now down to 5 or so.

The system now remembers if you switch the alerts off. So I can have the uconnect live app installed and not want to kill someone.

The live services menus seem to have been rationalised. You no longer have navigation settings in the apps menu as well as the nav one.

There is now an option to set the system to not play audio when you plug a phone in via USB. So I now no longer get my phone calls played back to me when I want to charge my phone. Also, if you have a loose connection, you do not keep jumping into audio playback.

I think the space is the same size but when I put that question to my dealer they informed me that it 'wasn't listed as an accessory'. Make what you will of that

hi

thanks for the info, yeah i think dealers go by the book, so its black and white to them in terms of parts and stuff.

I have been talking to a seller on ebay who said they had the 7in head unit with carplay in their 2016 fiat 500 and steering controls works etc.....half temped to give it a go for fun :)

will keep you posted
