Hi Chaps,

I had the X in at the dealer a few weeks back for some warranty work. I have noticed when doing a three point turn and have the car on full lock while moving forward or backwards and turning to come off full lock.

I get a strange sort of skiddy/scrapping noise, dealer couldn’t see anything and wondered if it was the tyre scrubbing with them being the 18” alloys.

Anyone else have this?

Thanks

I haven't noticed this with mine but others on this forum have reported similar noises which turned out to be an engine mounting in need of replacement.

That's interesting. Mine has been having the same problem when cold along with undue vibration, a feeling of hesitation, and noise at certain revs... I thought a mount was knackered but hadn't linked the grinding come knocking noise to it.

I'm definitely no mechanic so don't take my word for it but this thread may be useful to you

No issues with scrubbing on our Cross Plus with 18" alloys. Are you sure your arch-liners have not come loose - I have heard of this before especially with the recent inclement weather and build up of snow/ice in the arch pulling the liner off..... Worth a check.

I get this on full lock and in reverse. Becomes worse when coming of an incline and down drop kerbs and in colder temps.. Mine has done this from new, never gets worse. I'm on 225/45 R 18 and would expect these to be worse than a narrower and higher profile tyres. When on full lock and of an incline/step curb then the weight transfer is to the opposite lock wheel and the lock side wheel more lightly loaded does tend to skip and sometimes judder. If you have the window opens you hear the tyres skipping and sometimes to "ping/boing" as it skips on the surface.

I get it in drive and reverse, I have since read it can be caused due to one tyre having full contact with the ground and the other being titled over on full lock, leaving only have the tyre in contact with the ground.

This causes the first tyre to try and over take the opposite tyre. It’s just at slow speed full locks that I get it.

I get the same when turning round in my road, only on full lock at low speed. At first it seemed like I had full lock but it seems to move a tiny bit more that’s when I get the” sliding” noise.

Reports of some Mercs with big low profile tyres doing something similar. It seems the steering geometry can't cope with the widest tyres. Solution is not to use full lock.
