Checked my oil level yesterday and noticed it was about 1/4 down. Tried to get oil from various motor stores and couldn’t get any and even online with Castrol ,Mobil and Shell which showed nothing equivalent. I ended up going to main dealer and was surprised at the reasonable price for the genuine stuff. £12.96 1litre 0 w30 Selenia Digit.

For info car has done 31000 miles from new and this is first time I’ve ever had to top up.

Halfords has the EXACT same oil in stock:
Petronas Syntium 7000E 0W30 C2.

A small amount is branded by Petronas as Selenia and sold at Fiat dealers, but again it's the same oil from the same company, only different pakkage. ( and price....)

How many oil changes in between?

As per service schedule done at main dealer who supplied the car. 18000 miles oil change next oil change due 36000 miles. 9000 miles and 27000 miles just service checks. Just before first oil change dipstick showed slightly below max and now at 31500 miles just about 1/4 from max hence need to top up. I’ve done quite a bit of motorway miles recently .

I don't suppose it's causing high oil consumption yet, but I wouldn't go 18,000 miles between changes in any brand of car. The Multiair engine is particularly sensitive to oil quality and cleanliness. I know the regime you are following is in accordance with Fiat's schedule, but after the 3 year warranty engine health and life is not their problem.

Had a look and it’s normally £16.99 at Halfords so will keep that in mind. I’m surprised the main dealer is selling theirs cheaper?

My thoughts...
18.000mls is WAY to long between oil changes, specialy with the (very) oil sensitive MultiAir unit.
We bought a new Alfa Giulietta 1,6 Turbo MA in 2016, and it has just had it's third oil and filter change last week at 18.000mls...
I change it every 6500 mls.
Anyway, these days the official interval by Fiat is 9000-10000mls for MultiAir equiped engines.
To much MultiAir units failed due to contaminated oil....

That does seem a good price for the Selenia oil. I don't think the oil consumption you are seeing is excessive or too much of a concern.

Just checked the service schedule in my handbook. 9000 mile/annual oil and filter change intervals are "Recommended". I shall follow this recommendation which for me means every year/5-6000 miles.

It's the 1,4 engine of course....

Sometimes dealers are cheaper for consumables. I've found them to often be cheaper for tyres. And back in the day when flat blade wipers were just becoming popular, they were half the cost at Ford when compared to Halfrauds.

The thing that always puzzles me is when engines are sold across makers. A good example is FIAT's old 1.9 multijets in Vauxhall cars. These engines are notorious for clogging EGR valves, especially after a remap. To buy the part from a FIAT dealer on occasions cost double that of the Vauxhall dealers, who would buy it in from FIAT in the first place! Dealer markups can account for a lot.

Probably more likely made directly for vauxhall by there own suppliers after all they do pay to lisence the engine

I had the oil change last September, I think. I did roughly 3500 km since that. Now the oil level shows at the minimum. Is this normal?

One of the things I gather about the 1.4MA engine, having done some reading across various forums like the Alfa owners club, is that they're pretty difficult to fill with oil. They can look like they are drinking the stuff but they have just filled various channels in the multi air unit.

This is in part why, as I understand it, they can die. They've either been over or under filled. My question would be was it filled to the correct level in the first place? If it's burning oil at that rate, something is pretty wrong. Presumably it was at the maximum level 3.5k ago?

Not sure if the 2.4 is MA or not - it's not available in the UK. If it's gone from max to min in 3500km that seems excessive, but as Garree says, was it filled to max at the service?

It's MultiAir II.

Aren't they filling it to the max during the oil change normally? They used 5 liters of the stuff, according to the invoice.
