Hello,

Car has a knocking noise that sounds like it’s coming from rear. Seems to come and go, went to dealer for inspection under warranty.

Has been diagnosed as a failed engine mount, apparently it can echo and sound like it’s from the back of the vehicle. I have noticed when turning on full lock it’s considerably noisy.

I’m not awaiting for the part to arrive from Italy.

Is this a common fault? Does anyone know if fiat have redesigned the engine mounts?

Thanks

Which engine? Not seen any other reports of it on this forum, doesn't appear in feedback of faults from owners on the Honest John website.

It’s the 1.4 petrol multi jet. Dealer seemed to think they had done plenty of them.

Funnily enough, I mentioned something similar when I took mine in last week. I hear it in stop start traffic when coming on and off the throttle setting off etc. To be honest I didn't follow it up as I got side tracked by the whole clutch business.

Hmm, I too have a 1.4 multiair. Do you know which mount it was, and whether the failure was visible?

It was the Mrs who took the car in for me so didn’t get a huge amount of feedback. Dealer just said it was the engine mount and wasn’t unheard off. I have noticed if you pull away on the clutch and keep dipping and popping the clutch your can hear the engine knock. I have also noticed if you are driving slowly and steer sharp right and sharp lift you can hear a knocking noise. Once the part arrives from Italy and is fitted I will let you know if it’s improved. I have also noticed when doing a uturn and utilising full lock the car feels like it falls back out of full lock. Assuming it’s the weight of the engine dropping back suddenly

I'd like to know as well. I've heard the odd noise but nothing that I would have immediately identified as an engine mount issue. I did jack the car up and check the "usual" culprits on the suspension side. In the end, bearing in mind noise was worse in colder weather, I' put it down to "creeking trim". I have a similar sound from my seatbelt "B" post area that comes an goes.

When I get to tow the caravan again I'll be putting some serious loading on the engine mounts so hopefully that will expose any mount issues.

Is it not better to check all the engine mountings now, not wait until you are in the middle of nowhere with a caravan on the rear(n)

Just has mine in for warranty work. Noticed a knocking sound from the drivers rear side. Seemed worse when the car was first started and run, awful over bumps in the road. Also had a bad vibration through the steering wheel which I didn't mention to the dealer but they picked up anyway when diagnosing the problems.
Said I needed a new anti roll bar link on the front drivers side (they said this was what I thought was the knocking at the back) and a new engine mount for the vibration problem.
Parts only took three days to arrive (no idea if from Italy).
Car now has no vibration and no knocking.

Indeed however I'm in for some follow on warranty work so will do some aggressive swerving on the way there. (lateral engine mass transfer).

One should always try to ensure there is a definitive noise/issue before asking a dealer to investigate under warranty otherwise it just wastes everybody's time.

I've not looked on the 500X but suspect the only two readily visible mounts are the main No:1 cyl. block end mount and the central block/bell housing mount. The one or two gearbox end mounts are probably hidden behind the under tray.

Would be nice to know which mount people have had fail?

Hello,

Car had the work done today. Had a chat with the dealership, it’s the top engine mount that fails apparently. They said mine was the worst they had ever seen, the new one is a redesigned/improved part and shouldn’t fail prematurely again.

Car feels a lot smoother to drive, is a lot quieter and feels like a different car!

Interesting.

What production year is your 1.4 MultiAir. Mine is a 2015 baby.

I to a recent ex Fiat technician who I keep in touch with and the issues/replacements he saw was with the diesel engine models.

I was due to be in the garage this Friday for the outstanding warranty work and mount check but I'm back in hospital for urgent eye surgery (again) tomorrow so will not be able to feedback on my 1.4 MultiAir for a few weeks now.

Mine is a 2016 reg. I have noticed that it stills makes an unpleasant noise and feeling when coming off full lock(after doing three point turn etc). Sounds like something is catching/scraping and sort of falls off full lock. No idea what it could be.

Hi took my car to get a software update and mentioned similar symptoms as you described earlier on! Yes also has a premature wear engine mount!! Part in the U.K. apparently - so must be common unless Fiat have been stockpiling stuff?!? Wait n see!

For anyone else there is an easy test.

Open the bonnet. Go the offside wheel / cam belt end (for LHD cars go to nearside). Now place your hands on the cam belt cover and rock the engine longitudinally. If you get a creaking noise then the mount is/has failed. The mount in question is the one on the inner wing to engine right below your hands. Any noise is easy to hear. Depending on how far gone the mount is you may be able to see the metal support finger sliding around in the rubber mount.

pls dont judge mistakes happen. i was going down the mountain on a very rainy day and a large branch hit the bottom of my fiat and i wasn't able to avoid it on time. After this incident my car has been making a knocking noise as if the engine is loose. how much do you guys think this repair will cost? coming from a broke college student. i know there are four parts to the mount, and was told that maybe its $300 per mount part. is that a good price, pls dont let me get scammed like my last mechanic did me like.

I doubt that the engine is loose. In fact, I doubt that the engine was even struck by the branch, so it may be a relatively simple issue.

Under the car's front bumper/fender there will probably be a polypropylene plastic undertray, which is designed to keep dirt/water/debris out of the engine bay. The undertray is fairly flexible (it wouldn't last very long if it was brittle...) but it could be that the branch has still managed to crack it, or more likely shear off some of the mounting screws.

If the screws have been ripped out, the tray will bang against the bumper and/or the engine and/or the suspension subframe etc. so you'll hear a knocking. Get on your hands and knees in front of the car and have a peer underneath. You'll be able to see whether you have an undertray and/or what's loose down there.

If you don't have an undertray fitted (they tend to fall off, as above, or not get re-fitted when the mechanics service the car) .. or even if you do, then the branch may have damaged the exhaust mounts. The exhaust is bolted to the engine but then is suspended on rubber donuts. You may have pulled one of the exhaust hooks out of its donut, or the donut might have been ripped off the car.

In this case, the exhaust can flop about and strike the car body underside, so get a new donut, or replace the hook into its donut if it's still there, otherwise the exhaust might fracture, without proper support. Get a burly neighbour to crawl under there and have a look.

I really doubt the impact forced the motor out of position so much that the mounts got damaged. Normally debris stikes the sump, which being alloy tends to crack.. so unlikely that this is something that serious.

not sure how common it is but they are pretty ****ty mounts. I've replaced my lower dogbone and drivers die upper engine mount. The dogbone had shore 60 polyeurothane poured into the spaces before it was fitted so it's better. I plan to do the same to the top mount that cost me $700 at service ot get replaced. car has done 55k kms
