500x 1.4 multi air oil change

Hello,

I took the plunge and purchased a 500x recently, shes a beaut.

It was first serviced a year after being on the road. Including a full oil change, it had done 16k miles.

I understand people and fiat say its 9k miles to an oil change or 12 months however looking at my service schedule book. It states a service each year, for which an oil change is recommended at 9k miles but not mandatory until the next service at 18k.

Any one agree with this?

Thanks

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

As the MultiAir unit heavily depends on the right amount, clean, quality oil with the right specs, ( Euro 5: 5W40 C3, Euro 6: 0W30 C2, both synthetic), and a substantial amount of units fail over time ( VERY expensive...!!) it's recomended to change oil and filter every 6500 mls, OR once a year, whatever comes first, not regarding what the handbook says.
At about 35000mls, the small MultiAir strainer/filter should be changed as well, often overlooked....

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

For my 2015 1.4 petrol which has been serviced by the main dealer from new its 1st service at 9000m or 12 months just checks no oil change then 18000 major service with oil change then further 9000m no oil change then another major service with oil change then further 9000m and so on.

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

Cameron, I would get the oil changed at least every 9000 miles or annually, ensuring the correct oil (Petronus Selenia Digitek) is used. It's an inexpensive way of minimising the chance of premature engine problems.

When your engine reaches about 40.000 mls with this oil schedule, the MultiAir unit is at risk, and you're out of warranty....
Good luck...
Do a google search to find out how many fail at about that milage.
Search for Dodge Dart as well, as it uses the excact same engine...

9000 mls is Fiat recomendation, but it's way to long, 6-7000 mls max.

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

That according to Fiat/Alfa is described as a PLUG.

Same plug is used on non MultiAir engines dating from 2008 onwards.

By the looks of it looks more like a pressure/flow regulator than a filter/strainer, especially when you see the size of the apertures.

Might get a little mucky but there would probably have to be significant oil contamination, emulsification etc. for any serious block edges to occur (unless there is only a small hole in the end of the tube that is not visible).

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

Well it still is the one and only MultiAir filter, probably the 2010 Fiat 1,4 had this device already?
Anyway, it's not in the regular maintenace schedule, so often overlooked at a major service, but you can see in the picture above how dirty it can and will be, after a certain time and distance..

After a closer read, the above specs you supplied are for a MultiAir engine indeed.

No it's not, it has been used since 2010, and ONLY in MA units.

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

Sorry Peter but, in part, you are wrong.

The earliest use of this "plug" was in the:

X6 Alfa Mito 2008-2011 CC1.4 CMBZ KW77

To my knowledge there was not a 1.4, 77kW MultiAir engine in 2008, but that is not the deciding factor. When I look at the parts list (specifically for this part) I can not see the UniAir/MultiAir actuator assembly listed or shown in any slides/pictures.

I could be wrong, but then only by what Fiat document.

Fiat document on my version of ePER V68:

(FIAT) - 81 NUOVA PUNTO ABARTH MY2012 (2012-....)
(FIAT) - 4B PUNTO EVO ABARTH (2010-2012)
(FIAT) - 3Y NUOVA BRAVO MY 2010 (2010-....)
(FIAT) - 51 NUOVA PUNTO MY2012 (2012-....)
(FIAT) - 3J PUNTO EVO (2009-2011)
(ALFAROMEO) - QZ MITO MY2011 (2011-....)
(ALFAROMEO) - X7 GIULIETTA (2010-....)
(ALFAROMEO) - X6 ALFA MITO (2008-2011)

Regardless of anything else Fiat call this a PLUG and a plug it is not as plugs don't have holes in them unless the plug is a specific "direction diverter or regulator" of some type.

I think what is actually required here is not an A) me vs B) you but actually more technical detail and analysis of this "plug's" real design function.

I assume nothing, and try to check all my facts before posting. Nobody is always 100% right and this may be a case in example for you, me or both of us.

What I do appreciate is that you have highlighted this "plug's" possible relevance to MultiAir health at higher mileages.

We need to dig deeper into this.

Re: 500x 1.4 multi air oil change

It's not important what the Italian-English translation makes of it.
Even original wheelcovers are "Plugs" according to ePER....
It IS the MultiAir filter, it DOES get dirty, it MAY get blocked and it SHOULD be changed regularly.
No need to dig in deeper.
