I had a letter through the post at the weekend from Fiat telling me that I had to book my car in, had it less than 4 months from new, to have a software change to the Emissions output..

Has anybody else received one of these? What is it?

I think Fiat group were also implicated in the emissions scandal which seemed to be more of an industry standard, not just a Volkswagen on. Don't be surprised if the performance of your car is reduced. My nan and hey husband's VW was modified and apparently it was never the same after.

What would the implications be if I decide not to have it done?

I imagine they could withhold your warranty. And if you get it serviced at a Fiat dealer they'll just do the recall then anyway.

But I don't know for certain what/if there'll be any implications.

None legally. This will be a service "Campaign" as opposed to a compulsory safety recall.

I doubt, but you should check with your dealer, that your warranty will be affected either.

If I were you I would wait till your first service (another 8 months or up to 9K miles total) and see what other reports appear from people who have had it done.

In addition if reports are not good then you can tell the dealer NOT to apply the update. If they say they are obliged to then you have the option of getting the service done by a smaller VAT registered independent garage who will most probably not have the equipment to software update your ECU, but should/will have the ability to reset the service counter and oil change counter.

Garree001 Starbucks Junkie I have the 2.0 Multijet Auto and I had a software upgrade re emissions some months ago. As mentioned above it was a Campaign, I forget the number but 60215 springs to mind, I'll look it up for you. Fiat were usually evasive about it, but yes Garree001 Fiat were implicated with that particular engine, sneaky bit of software. I don't know if the Recall solves the problem or deletes the 'Cheat'.

After it was done I didn't notice any difference in performance, I felt that the consumption was very slightly worse, but not very much.

I'll dig out the Campaign no and post it. Nothing to fear unless it's a new campaign.

I think this issue is to do with the temperature that the emissions test is carried out. Several manufacturer's cars have been found to exceed the permitted NOx levels at high or low temperatures. This isn't strictly illegal, but some are taking steps to rectify it. Quite different from the VW situation, where the software detected a test situation and put the engine into a different mode far removed from normal driving.
