Car broken into, kind of....

Had my 500x cross for a year and half now and its great. Lots and lots of small problems with it, electrics, boot latch, breaks but love the car!

I have the keyless entry version and have found quite a few times when I have come to the car the next day that its unlocked. Presuming its just me, I now make a massive effort to lock it with the fob and watch the lights flash. This morning came out to mind my doors open and the content of my boot stolen. No damage to the car so it must have been unlocked and the keyless fob on the 3rd floor of the house so it couldn't have been hijacked.

Is is possible there is a fault with the car? I've never forgotten to lock any other car over years. Any one ever noticed anything like this before?

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

Interesting one.

When locking - apart from watching for the lights flash, have you physically checked one of the rear door handles ?

Do you have a spare fob - where is it kept ?

Is it possible the fob you use is being sat on or otherwise nudged wherever you keep it ?

I keep mine in a sturdy leather pouch on my belt ( think Zippo lighter style pouch but a few mm longer ) because I hate fobs in my pocket - too big and too easy to activate accidentally.

Also - when you lock by using the fob - is the boot actually locking at all ? Only way to check would be to lock car - take fob a safe distance from car, leave it there and walk back to car and check that boot IS actually locked ?

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

Thanks for the reply. I have checked the back doors are locked, but I haven't check the boot. I have been sending my girlfriend out to check the doors so I didn't go near it with the fob. Spare key is up stairs so not that. It is possible that the key gets sat on etc over night I suppose. We'll just have to get into a routine of checking the car every time we lock it once the keys are in the house. Cheers

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

You can check it is locked with the key in your possession. When you press the button on the front of the door handle, the sensor on the back of it is disabled for a couple of seconds. So you can grab the handle and give it a tug to see if the door is locked.

However, the range of the key seems to be variable. My flat is on the second floor and the car's probably 30 or so metres away. This is out of the key's range. But when I visit my parents' house, the car being on the other side of the front door and a brick wall a couple of metres away is not enough. So I have to take the key upstairs to my bedroom instead of leaving it in the key bowl by the front door.

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

May have been the victim of one of the range extending devices described on another thread. See if you can get a lidded aluminium box to keep the keys in. You can check whether it works by standing by the car door with the key in the box and trying to unlock it. I found wrapping the key in foil was effective, but a box would be more convenient. The lid must give a good metal to metal seal though.

There is also an option in the vehicle setting on uConnect that enables/disables the operation of the boot lock with respect to the door locks.

I've not played with this setting (I have mine set to ALL) but it might? be that the boot lock is set to independent in which case you will need to operate the boot lock/unlock button on the key fob.

You are asking for the whole car to go! The Police state any number of times about scumbags using fishing rods to pick up car keys left in the front door bowl via the letterbox. OK, maybe your bowl is round a corner but you really shouldn't leave them so accessible.

Thanks for the concern.

The layout of their porch area means it's impossible to use a rod of any sort to steal the keys. Partly because it's two corners so they'd need to use a u-shaped rod to double back on themselves as well as a as series of mirrors to be able to see. The bowl also has a noisy ceramic lid on and an easily disturbed Doberman nearby as well (she drives me mad because she barks at every noise be it at 3pm or 3am).

But mainly it's impossible to steal the keys because the inside door hasn't got a letterbox...

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

Have to say I'm not a fan of the remote lock thingy on the 500X. I've always been a bit OCD about checking the cars locked etc. I can never work out despite reading the manual - how the button on the handle works. Shut the door - touch the handle and the lights flash but you seem to have to wait a few seconds before you can press to lock the car. Are we saying you can use the rears to check at any time during locking?

The button on the door handle works straight away. Shut the door and press it. You hear the locks activate, the lights flash (if you enabled this in the uConnect menu) and the car is locked. If you grab the rear of the front door handles within a couple of seconds of locking the car using the handle button, it won't unlock the car again. This is to enable you to check that the car is locked up safely. However I have found that this isn't an exact science and sometimes it'll still unlock the car. So if I want to check that everything's secure, I just give one of the rear door handles a tug instead

I've had this happen just a couple of times and it has always been when I've been too keen and had my index or over fingers still above the door handle. You have to ensure your hand is well remove before pressing the button otherwise the car things you are trying to unlock an already unlocked car so just the lights flash.

Re: Car broken into, kind of....

I've taken to locking mine with the remote, as a double press activates the deadlocks. I don't think that happens with the door button.
