The other half is steering me towards a 500x 4x4, after I have discounted the Jeep Cherokee & Jeep Renegade ( Ok inside, but too boxy outside )

Presently I am in a 2013 Chevrolet 2.2 TD SUV 4x4 with a 6 Speed Tiptronic of which has been a loyal servant on road and awesome off road for the past 4 years. Do approx. 15,000 - 18,000 miles a year.

I see their are 3 types of 500x 4x4, 2.0 Diesels with 9 speed Auto or 6 speed manual and a 1.4 Petrol Turbo with a 6 or 9 speed auto..? I note their are either a Cross or Cross Plus specs. Though its the engines and transmissions that interest me over the material matters.

Could owners of these who run them tell me more about real world driving, likes / dislikes that the motoring hacks do not comment on...?

I have the 2.0 diesel 9 speed auto Cross Plus variant and I love it. I don't do any serious off-roading in it, but it soaks up everything the weather round here has thrown at it so far. I have had a few minor niggles with it, but underneath the car is a star

Alanw47 thanks for the feedback.

How well does the 4x4 work, I assume its 2wd till ESP / MSR detects slip and the rear wheels kick in or is it permanent 4 wheel drive. Do you drive in full Auto or do you drive with manual override, is the transmission seamless with its changes at high and low speed up hills and down on the road..?

I bought the 4x4 more for dealing with the weather round here than off-roading, but it does everything I want from it. In Auto mode it's 2WD until it detects the need for 4WD, in Off Road mode it's adaptable 4WD with a dash display illustrating Front/Rear divide. For reasons of economy I drive it in full auto mode unless there's a reason not to.

The box is full automatic, not semi, and having 9 to choose from the changes are almost always smooth and frequently not discernible. In full auto mode it avoids 1st unless on a gradient. In Sport mode it uses 1st by default and banshees are let loose, and it tends not to trouble 9th very much.

I had one for a 24 hour test drive before I bought it it, and put 200 miles on it while I had it, answering most of my questions that way.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks Alanw47 for the feedback, hiring one or a long test drive on / off road should make my mine up taking into account your feedback.
