Hi,

I'm just about to switch from a 500 to a 500X and contemplating the chrome side moulding. It's possible to pick up the genuine part for about £170 but I can't find any information about fitting them.

If they are easy to fit I'd rather do it myself.

Judging by the estimate for the full chrome pack I'm guessing the door mouldings would be about 1 hours labour.

Anyone know?

Thanks

I would be worried that they would come off eventually , especially after using car washes etc.

They are fitted using the supplied 3M tape, like most car badges nowadays, area needs to be well cleaned using the solvent wipes provided, allowed to dry and then to aid adhesion gentle warm the area with a hairdryer, firmly press on and leave for couple hours before using the car.

If you need or want to remove them then gentle heat the moulding with a hairdryer and pull off. The remaining adhesive can be removed using 3M adhesive remover(expensive) or buy TIM remover from computer shop which is a similar product but much cheaper.

Very simple job!

Thanks for the replies.

I have to admit I'm confused now. I've had a dealer tell me it needs Fiat's own primer and adhesive at a cost of about £60 which I'm guessing are re-branded Sikaflex or similar.

I've also been told by someone selling apparently original parts on ebay that they are self-adhesive.

I've asked the dealer selling me the car to give me a quote to fit them but I'm expecting a silly number.

SKBAR247, do you know for sure they come with 3M tape? That seems the most likely but if it's the standard double-sided sticky pad stuff, I'd have thought it would leave a 1-2mm gap behind the trim?

Thanks for all of the replies.

I chickened out, after the dealer quoted a surprisingly reasonable amount to fit them I decided against the risk of me doing them and messing them up.

I might also have some come back if they fall off.

i have just fitted a couple of weeks ago side swipes to my Fiat Panda 2010 that i bought off ebay for £35 i did this when we had a warm sunny dry day and i got the sun shining on each side of my car until the panels were warm to the touch i then used the wipes supplied to clean the area which i then marked with tape for the levels i then peald of the tape backing and stuck them on i then used a small clean paint roller to apply pressure all along the swipe until it was very close to no gap between the panel i then turned my car around to get the sun on the other side and did the same again i have washed my car a few times since and the swipes show no sighn of coming off so i rate this job as very easy if you follow the instructions supplied

If a job is worth doing......

7 days after picking the car up, I noticed the longest nearside strip was flapping.

So I can confirm that the strips are fixed with double sided foam strips. I cannot vouch for how well the dealer cleaned surfaces, warmed them up etc On this evidence I can't imagine them standing up to a pressure wash for example even if the surfaces had been prepared properly.

I've used some Tiger Seal PU adhesive instead of taking it back to the garage. So we'll see how well this holds up, but I'm guessing it's just a matter of time before the others come loose.

i wash my car with a bucket and brush and i would not use a jetwash on the body so my side mouldings are still very well attached
