I've just purchased a 500X City Lounge and found out that I miss having a rear parking camera. Although the new car has audible reversing sensors, can I get a genuine Fiat reversing camera retro-fitted?

There are a few people advertising parking cameras on the internet, but they have displays stuck on top of the dashboard. I've seen on Youtube that the 500X sold in the USA has a reversing camera that uses the Fiat built in media display unit. So it obviously exists, but can you buy this and get it fitted in the UK? :)

Wouldn't bother.....just get used to the sensors......and would have thought the expense would be way too much.

Thank you, but I'm looking for a reply rather than an opinion. We all have opinions but yours doesn't help me. Nevertheless thank you for taking time to reply.

Its actually fairly easy to implement an after market camera, if you know what to look for.

The head unit has an AUX input, which can be used to hook up any video input (even a DVD player). A mechanic hooks power to a camera when the reverse gear engages (easy to do, because of the rear reverse light). Once the camera gets power, it sends signal to the AUX input and the head unit switches to it automatically.

At least thats the "general idea" and I've seen it work in many cars that previously did not have a rear view camera.

But, after market rear cameras miss the functionality with the parking lines that move based on the steering wheel angle.

Many thanks for this, but I'm not looking for a DIY solution. Can anybody point me towards a dealer or recognised installer that won't invalidate my warranty?

I've rung a few Fiat dealerships without luck. Although a reversing camera can be purchased as a factory fit, it isn't available as a retrofit.

I challenged one dealer about fitting a camera to an aux input, as kindly suggested in a reply to this thread. I was told this is impossible as it is a DVD input that is electronically linked to the braking system. The aux input doesn't work unless the brakes are on, which defeats the object when you are trying to reverse into a parking space.

This all seems a bit daft, if you can have a Fiat 500X with a factory fitted parking camera - the technology must be in place for a retrofit. :(

If you want a reverse camera......buy the model with it fitted.......oops....sorry another opinion!

well, logically there IS a video input thats not connected to the brakes, which is used by the original rear view camera. I would expect this to exist in all cars, even in the ones without a rear view camera.

A few years ago, I added cruise control to a car without. All I had to do, was buy the steering wheel buttons!!! everything else was in the ECU of the car.

Anyway...

I was a bit more careful. When I was buying the car, I asked what options would not be possible to add as an accessory, which was pretty much everything. I added everything, even the most obscure feature (like the 3rd head rest). The only option I didn't add, was the full leather interior (Lounge gets half). Which would be a shame to pay and see it destroyed by the kids.

Thank you for the replies, I had a call from 2x different Fiat dealers that have both said the same thing.

An adaptor is needed to allow the aux input to the head unit to connect a rear camera. This isn't available on the aftermarket at the moment and you cannot buy a Fiat adaptor because Fiat won't sell it to them. The adaptor tells the head unit to talk to the rear view camera.

Third party adaptors are available for older models, but the 500X is too new. I was told that perhaps in 6 months time a third-party adaptor will be available, but not at the moment.

So that's that. Thanks for all of the input.

Hi there
New to the forum. Ordered cross plus arriving June time. You can buy a remote camera linked to reversing light feed. This then sends signal to in built monitor in a slip over rear view mirror. No messy wiring or units on top of the dash ..remember the days of sat nav, phone holder, speed camera alert....had to loose weight to fit in the car then
