My 500L dualogic has started getting stuck in 3rd gear. The red transmission warning light comes on. It makes no difference if I use manual. The only way is to accelerate very hard before 2000 rpm, then it changes to 4th and stays there, not changing to 5th. 2 diagnostic checks have not found the problem. Has anyone else had this, or have any ideas? Thanks, Derek (newbie)

What kind of diagnostics..?

4 poster ramp and 20 minutes checking..

Or 30 seconds with a phone in the drivers seat

The robot needs the correct amount of the correct fluid.. the OBD Port cannot confirm..or deny this
;)

The diagnostic checks were both done with a laptop plugged in, one they had the car all day, the other while I waited about 30 mins, but not on a ramp. From what you said, could this be just low transmission oil level?

Who are ‘they’

If the transmission fault light has come on then there WILL be a store code.
Just likely that ‘they’ haven’t got the correct equipment to read it.

This is important
A basic obd reader won't be able to show up codes for the dialogue system

But Its likey to be something like low selespeed fluid level due to a leak ( which would need sorting and can be very expensive depending on where from)
Other possible causes are things like various sensors for the clutch position a actually worn out clutch gear selector position sensors
Then really expensive parts like the pump or pressure accumulator
Hence why the codes are needed for a starting point

Unlikely.. the transmission is a standard manual gearbox

Your issue sounds like the control of gear change is 'wrong'

The ROBOT needs fluid to change the gear and work the clutch ;)

But low fluid doesnt put on a warning light.. as I said you need somebody to:
1. Visually check
Then.. IF the fluid looks clean..and the correct spec.. and a sensible level you can

2. use the software to set up all the calibrations

Weird how its just 3rd gear though

Has this got gradually worse..or happened 'overnight'

Thanks guys. So it needs a proper Fiat obd to find the dualogic error codes, ok.
When someone said low oil I thought of gearbox but I see you mean selespeed oil level, so will check that. Had the car 6 months with 40k on it and drove perfectly for a year. Now on 60k and just started occasionally getting stuck in 3rd after a long run, so when hot. But has gradually got worse over last few months so that it now does it all the time from cold, and red 'cog' warning light always comes on now.
An independent Fiat specialist thinks it might be a worn clutch plate, but to me that doesn't fit, there's no sign of clutch slip.
