I have a 2015 Fiat 500L. In the past few weeks I have noticed a smell in the cabin when stopped at a signal. I can also see vapor type puff coming from the engine compartment at the same time when the smell starts. I have checked all fluids, and there are no warning lights on the dash when this happens. All instrument indicators look normal. This doesn't happen every time or even every trip. It's hard to describe the smell, it's kind of like you passed a char broiled hamburger place. The air conditioner has been on every time because I live in Southern CA and it's been hot. The air conditioner seems to still be working fine so I doubt if it's the AC coolant leaking. If anyone has had a similar problem and knows the cause I would greatly appreciate a response.

Hi don't know if this reaches you too late but had similar experience. Turns out intercooler had split and was letting exhaust fumes escape into engine bay and thus into cabin via vents.
Regards

Thanks..

My sons 1248mj has been poisoning us since November.. found a 'smoking gun' of a sooty EGR leak.. but am convinced there is more

Having spent weeks on end leant over the motor.. it will be a joy to look somewhere more accessible :)

Will let you know what a check of the hoses reveals

Try this.
I have also been able (with the help of a mechanic friend)
to pinpoint another issue with toxic fumes entering the cabin.
After a few minutes of following our noses we (well mechanic)
was able to trace problem to chuffing from number 4 injector.
New copper rings have been ordered and are en-route.
shall keep you updated once it is fitted.

I actually ran it last week with the airbox out of the way..

All looked dry.. no wet residue.. shone around most parts.. no smoke ..fumes or drips

After 3 minutes of 'sniffing'..and not noticing anything.. I got the 'Metallic Taste' back :(

Thinking back..I flooded around the injectors with water early on.. saw no bubbling.. or contamination

Now the weather is wet.. Im stepping back

Got an MOT booked..

Might highlight an issue.. might not

If it needs hundreds spending..its the end
Runs well and is clean and tidy.. but probably only worth @£650 nowadays

(A friend has just spent £2 k chasing a diesel contamination issue.. still not resolved) :(

This seems to be a 500L thing, ours does it and was blamed on the injector O-rings, all of which were replaced and it still does it. Dangerous much?
