My mechanic (not a main dealer) says the car is noisy when cold. Twinair 0.9. He reckons the timing chain needs looking at. Any other causes? Thanks

How many miles on car?
Service history?

62k miles, 2014 plate, had the engine replaced by Fiat in late 2018 under warranty as the dual mass flywheel went and Fiat sat on the fence and the engine got so damaged they just took it out and put in a new one. I started a post on coolant as the engine replacement has led to coolant leaking for various reasons. My mechanic reckons it's the chain needs looking at. Car was always main dealer serviced up to Aug 2019 when the warranty ended.

So the engine is just over 2 years old?
How many miles has new engine done?
When was oil last changed? What brand and grade oil was used?

Hope your 'noisy when cold' issue has been sorted?

Curious about your earlier story. Correct me if I don't get this right:

In 2018 your 2014 500L developed DMF problem that went undetected (?) and damaged the engine. Fiat replaced the engine under warranty as it was their fault.

My Q at this point:
- How was it that a 4 year old car still covered by a warranty?
- What was the nature of the DMF problem, what did Fiat do or didn't do?

I too have 500L TA and just recently changed clutch + DMF at a total cost of £520 (independent garage, 2014 plate, 48k miles).

I got a 5 year warranty from the dealer in Ireland when I bought it new.

DMF issue started with lots of vibration in the gear stick on idle in neutral and lots when changing from 1st to 2nd. A visit to the dealer led to lots of back and forth with instructions from Fiat to drive around in it and take it in every few days for check ups. This led to loss of power - car went into safe mode and in the end after weeks in the garage Fiat popped in a new engine. This possibly led to issues with the coolant system and oil leaks. The mechanic I now use has shown me failed oil seals and damage to the coolant system. All sorted now though.

Fiat offers 5 yr warranty in Ireland? That's nice.

What was the mileage on your old engine when DMF problem developed?

Was it you who mentioned that you can reach 50 mpg on open roads? I couldn't get past 42-44 mpg. Is yours the 5 seater version?
