Evening,

2014 1.4 16v

I used the draper kit locking both cams and the crank.
I changed the belt tensioner and water pump.

I turned the car over by hand a couple of times and everything felt ok, no metal on metal noises.

Bolted it all back together and now it wont start.

When setting the tensioner I lined up both marks, then rotated the engine a couple of times by hand - no problems, but when I looked at the marks they were not lined up anymore. I did this twice just to check and it was the same both times.

The car is not registering the position of something, crank or cam position sensor ? Could the timing be out even though I locked both cams and crank ?

Wat have I missed ?

Thanks

Just to add.

I loosened the camshaft nut whilst taking the old belt off, but I tightened it back up before setting the tension. I think this has resulted in the timing being moved slightly.

Will retension with the nit loose and see how we go.

Morning

The crank pulley didn’t come off. The pulley for the auxiliary belt did, I will check whether there are any marks on it.

My obd2 reader shows no codes

Thanks

Hi again :)

Its a conundrum isnt it..

Right.. just to be doubly sure..

Immobiliser ..ok

Fuel pump.. ok

So unlikely to be anything other than
Poor timing

So either:
Valve
Spark
Injection

Ive not worked on this size motor for 10 years..
Back then they were set up at mid.stroke.. rather than TDC

THIS SECTION is pretty quiet.. so for tech input I would look for guidance in TechTalk
blu73 has timed MANY 1.4's

So will be a good point of reference

Can you easily post pics of the timing gear?

All fixed !!

Things I missed,

Tension the belt before tightening up the 18mm cam sprocket.

You were correct the aux belt pulley does go on in a certain way...

Thank you for your help.

I reckon I can change a belt in just over an hour now, if anybody in West Kent needs help or wants to borrow the draper tools just let me know.
The water pump takes longer as cleaning off all the old silicone is hassle, say another 30 mins for that.

I have a starter motor to remove on another Italian car, working from home has its advantages!

glad you got it sorted, but for anyone else reading in the future he is correct. You have to tension the belt with the cam sprocket loosened, this enables the belt to tension evenly, then nip up the cam sprocket after its tensioned. If you do it the with the cam sprocket tight you find that as soon as you remove the lockers there is tension on the belt and it moves the cam slightly taking the timing out of whack.

And as with all fires that bottom aux belt pulley has to go the right way, with the little pip on the crank lined up with the little hole on the pulley. That little pip is easily snapped off if you snug down the pulley with it incorrectly aligned, not the end of the world but be super careful in future if that pulley gets taken off - you really dont want to try change the crank pulley so you have a pip still, its next to impossible to get off lol.

People are scared of these cause they are interference engines unlike the older 8v ones but if anything they are easier to do.
