All of a sudden my Fiat 500 twinair 2014 boot would not open. I have seen a few posts here with a similar problem and one had the wiring loom all torn up and another the handle switch was not working. Mine seem to be fine in both departments. I’ve checked the little switch with a meter and it is working. I have also check to see if a supply is coming to the purple and black wires on the lock itself but nothing is coming. I have as yet not split open the rubber covering the harness entering the tailgate but it doesn’t seem to be in a bad condition. I hardly use the car and is in great condition, I’m a biker and use my bikes daily for everything else. The car is only used for shopping or to take the kids to school.

I was wondering if anyone here has a wiring diagram or the whole list of fuses in the engine bay. I’m guessing that there is a dedicated fuse which might have blown. I will remove and check them all one by one next but it’s nice to know what is what.

Hi I have as yet had no trouble with my boot release but our old Idea and Croma played up and needed some treatment in my shed!. I would guess fiat have used the same set up which is a motor operated mechanism the motor is very like an old Hornby train motor three pole with a copper commutator.
The motor does not like damp and the commutator will need a clean.Otherwise
a new boot lock from the dealers.

Hi. :)

Im guessing the bottom button on the remote key does nothing..?

That should send a signal to the same mechanism..

Tried locking and unlocking.. with a little load on the tailgate..

The bottom button on the key does work. So at least I can use that for now and it also rules out most problems. I’m thinking the ecu got confused.

How does the 500L boot unlock? Is it on the central locking (so just opens on the handle when the car is unlocked or the separate boot release button on the key/remote has been used) or does it have a boot lock (key operated) with an "unlock" button in the glovebox (long story!) or on the dashboard etc.? I presume it's the former.

If the remote control button on the key fob unlocks the boot then the "unlock" circuit and wires under the grommet must essentially be fine so that would mean that it's the switch in the handle/release that isn't doing its thing.

Which "little switch" have you checked with a meter? If the handle isn't tripping the microswitch on the latching mechanism then it could be an issue around the handle. The switch appears to work via the key fobm so it's working okay (as you possibly noted, depending which switch you meant).

If (I don’t know but chances are good) it’s like my panda I’ve just bought then it was the same. Mine was solved by lifting the hatch so the handle was horizontal and soaking around the pad you pull with electrical contact cleaner then wd40. Moving the pad all the time so the straw for the can gets behind the switch. Did this a few times and as it started to come back then keep opening and closing the boot using the handle until thoroughly bored. Has worked every time since and no disassembly required. Good luck.

SOLVED!
The issue was a faulty harness. There is a rubber bellows between the tailgate and the chassis, where the tailgate hinges. In this you'll find the wires running to the lock mechanism and rear lights. Some of these wires were torn by use, from opening and closing the rear door. We cut a section of the wires and replaced them with new, better quality multistrand wires, soldered and heat shrinking the joints which are far away from the creasng area. OK Now.
