Radiator fan started making a lot of noise like the blades were making contact with something so I removed the fan and as I took it out another component fell out. Looks like this had been rattling around and hitting the blades. Put it all back together and fan is quiet once more. My question is - what is this bit?! Where has it come from? Do I need to repair / replace it?

Thanks to you all for your help - it's definitely the radiator fan resistor. I'll try soldering it back on. Thanks again!

Not something I have needed to tinker with.. but it did look familiar..

To Bagofwasps :

The function of this resistor MAY control the 2 fan speeds : similar to the interior fan in the dashboard ;)

Correct
Taken from internet

The cooling fan resistor is an electrical resistor that limits power to the fan in steps, so that the fan can operate at different speeds according to the cooling system's demands

If a new one is a tenner, it might be less of a mission to just buy a new one and fit it, rather than soldering your old one together and it still not working so you then have to dismantle it a second time to fit a new one anyway.

But it looks fairly accessible and you might like soldering things.. I dunno.. :D

Good point. I think I might just get the new one since I had a look and the other component (thermistor perhaps?) on the board looks like it has seen better days as well. Thanks

My guess is that the other component is a thermal fuse. For safety it cuts the circuit if the resistor overheats (they do get hot and rely on the fan for cooling - hence the location on the housing).
