Hello, is there anyone out there who can explain how to remove the rear brake drums on our 2011 Fiat 500L Twinair? The rear brakes have an annoying squeak when cold and I wanted to get the drums off and clear out any debris that might have accumulated, and check for break shoe wear of course, mind you with only 30,000 miles clocked up I am not expecting much! Thank you in advance, Chris.

Jack it up and take suitable precautions ( just put that bit to save me from forum safety freaks!) You will see 2 pins, take them out (12mm socket) then then drum should pull off. If not, either whack the face when the wheel bolts screw in with a hammer to shock it off or screw 2 8mm bolts into the threaded holes between the wheel bolts to force it off. Then get jiggy with some brake cleaner etc!

Are you sure you are talking about a 500L ? The 500L was introduced in 2013, not 2011. And I would be surprised if there was a 500L with drum brakes ?

Yes Brandy's quite right... are you Talking about a Fiat 500.......L spec? in which case you need to be on the form page above this.

But the advise given above still stands (y)

There seems to be a fair share of car owners who come on here with limited knowledge of how their vehicle actually works/functions, even the most basic information eludes them. Then again it's only easy when you know the answer.

Had a discussion some time ago on here on how car ownership has changed over the years. We live in a throw away society now & to some that includes their four wheeled transport, I'm not having a go or pointing the finger at anyone, just making an observation. OK, I come from a time if you owned a car, you tinkered & at least carried out basic servicing, noticing anything that required seeing to along the way.

You shold perhaps limit your sneering as there is always someone else who knows more and there is a lot of misinformation given. My daughter has a 500 (Lounge) TA and her Fiat Main Dealer have recently MOTd the vehicle they supplied from new. They sent her (apart from the bill) a video of the workshop "in process" along with a note of advisories. It passed the MOT - but they listed rear brake shoes need replacing soon, Cam Belt is due for replacement. NO IT INSN'T engine has a chain drive lasts life of engine ... but I bet they are not above charging for it if she is ever stupid enough to trust them with future work! This sort of laxity and inaccuracy is not confined to Fiat I have experienced it at Jaguar, Mercedes and Volvo.

Bit of an old thread revival. Far from sneering as pointed out just observation. What your saying about the dealer here is a whole different story fella.
