Hi there!

If anybody has been having issues with bluetooth pairing on the newer iPhones, there has been an update for the uconnect radio.

I believe it is safer for your dealer to do it, but my dealership is quite far away and I just manually did it myself with a prepared usb flash drive. Tell them that you have issues pairing your new iPhone.

Firmware flashing always has risks associated to it. Make sure you have a good known working USB drive! You will be responsible if flashing fails etc. There is NO WAY to DOWNGRADE. So you gotta stick to liking the new black background Ahhhh

This is for all uConnect models, those with the 'Nav' and those without it. I have only tested it with my own one which is without the Nav and it's fine. (I think this is for European models, not sure if the US one differs?)

Video tutorial (Italian)

The newer firmware version is: VP2_CO_12.00.24.01

Code:
Fiat Source: download.witexedi.aftersales.fiat.com/VP/VP2_CO_12.00.24.01.zip
Mega Mirror: mega.nz/#!JMNUgIiA!ABsCmJi_MhKAMItw65fPRxQElGcF4KPWTvIxzrwH6M4

I updated my system by extracting the zipped firmware onto a cleanly formatted flash drive (FAT32) and then pasting all of the extracted files onto the drive. I plugged in the USB and waited a couple of minutes until the firmware software update dialog appeared and pressed Start.

Drove around the A40 for 25 minutes and whilst updating, the screen does flash blank and sometimes does change to Italian whilst updating various parts of the system. After the update is complete a green tick appears, you unplug the USB and allow it to turn on itself and it is updated.

If you have not prepared the usb correctly, or files are corrupted it is possible to brick the device, which is why I recommend you to send it to a garage to minimise this risk as you are the one doing this. The files are digitally signed with a certificate to prevent modification of the original system files (so not possible to edit the firmware :( )

There is graphical changes, the background is no longer red but black and the bluetooth is fixed for newer iPhones. Apart from that, I honestly see no benefits of this unless you are having issues with Bluetooth pairing.

Changelog (Google Translate)
it solves the following problems:
failure DAB
browser slowness
black screen
lock or spontaneous reboot
problems with iPhone IOS 10
block during listen-called
voice recognition nonfunzionante
cd / usb not working
audio malfunction during navigation
misalignment speed tachometer-radio

Introduces these improvements:
increased list of compatible telephones
activation and deactivation function ECO drive via voice commands
information ECO drive on gpl versions
improved the strategy of the AF function
possibility to switch off and on the SMS READER function
possibility to update the maps through tom tom site
possibility to view additional elements on maps
possibility to view street numbers and name roads on map
possibility to select a POI on map and display the name and phone number
display Album Art for usb devices
improved SMS READER function
improved scanning frequencies from steering wheel commands
improved directory order
improved graphics ECO drive application

I did notice that disabling the eco button on the dualogic will no longer show the Alfa's DNA screen on the uconnect radio. Probably bug since it's initial firmware release seeing as the Mito uses this the same radio.

Found a pic on Google of the black ui (which is what Fiat are now using on their newer uconnect models)

So my wife's uconnect radio in her 2014 Fiat 500L was playing up (sound was muted, sometimes would take serveral minutes to power up...)

I thought I'd try this software update but it looks like it hasn't worked and I may have bricked it! :eek:

It got stuck on the "Software update" please wait approx. 30 minutes. I left it there for several hours but no more progress (the progress bar from the video never appeared).

I've tried resetting by removing the battery but it just goes back to the same software update screen. It doesn't even turn off if you switch off the ignition.

I'm guessing I'm screwed but does anyone have any suggestions or know where I can get an inexpensive replacement? There's one on eBay for £450!

So my upgrade issues had a happy ending. I had to use a different (smaller 16GB) USB stick but even then it wouldn't restart the update process despite numerous attempts. In the end I tried plugging in my phone which drew power from the USB socket and after this the USB stick lit up and the update resumed and completed successfully. Phew!

I updated my uconnect from version 6.x.x.x to 12.00.24.01. Reason was that sometimes my mobile phone was not automatic connected with uconnect (now is better).
Update without big problems. Used 8gb USB stick and it takes ~45 minutes.
Seen differences between version 6 and 12:
- Black background (instead Red), :rolleyes:
- Bluetooth icon now next to CD icon (instead on left),
- Radio / Media name in the left top corner if using e.g. navigation (before was nothing shown). (y)

But, I found 2 new problems (on old version was OK):
- Voice selection of contacts works not so good as before, :mad:
- the first word pronounced by the navigation is a bit cut off. :confused:

I hope they (FCA) fix those problems and we can get a new update for our uconnect. :worship:

Good to hear it had a fail safe to perform the update.

Honestly, check your usb's before you update to ensure they are not on the verge of having it's nand flash chips corrupted. A reliable smaller size usb is probably more preferable and ensure the stick is format to fat32.

This is somehow strange, my Uconnect had the black background from the beginning (build date of my 500L is 10/2014).

Brandy

Our build was during 2015, around September and it had the red background. Not sure if Fiat may have used a generic VP2 software variation before then for all VP2 uconnects.

Yeah I had a rough time with contacts on voice activation that I don't even use it as it won't ever recognise the contact or it will not call them at all. I don't have the nav model, so I do not know anything about the navigation issues.

There is a newer VP2 software but it is designed specifically for the 500X, not too sure if it will be compatible with our one (even though its the same radio), it has a couple of bug fixes so it may include those? I forgot where the link was but it was mirrored on some Italian Fiat forum. I'm sure if we raised a query with Fiat about the voice issues they may be able to provide another firmware insight.

I personally am interested in modifying the software, but it seems like the firmware is signature verified to ensure the integrity of the files are not bad or modified :(

Also guys, those of us with the default firmware on 6.XX, we had the same DNA screen from the Alfa when we turn off eco mode it will show up something like this below:

maxresdefault.jpg

This eye candy seems to have been gone, I think it may have been one of their mistakes on the dev team to include this on a Fiat lol.

FIRMWARE: 12.00.24.04

This firmware is for the VP2_334 radio, an incremental upgrade from 12.00.24.01.

This update is for the Fiat 500X VP2 radio (this right button has 'APPS' and not 'More'), not sure if it will work with our radio so be careful (though our radio is VP2 too but it is not of the same customisation).

Ok I checked and this is NOT FOR OUR RADIO DO NOT FLASH! Project code compatible with all Fiat 520/521/334/226/MP variants NOT OUR 500L 330 PROJ CODE!

Clearly the difference compared to 12.00.24.01 is minimal, the update is optional, and since there is no changelog you do not know what the improvements are. At first glance I think everything is the same as before, anyway never say never ..

Who gave me the links? No one, I simply reasoned on the structure, or connection path:

"download.witexedi.aftersales.fiat.com" is the address of the official Fiat website for the workshops

"/ VP / VP2" indicates the exact model of our Uconnect 5 "(for example, the VP4 corresponds to the Uconnect 6.5")

"334" is the Fiat project code for our 500X (eg the Renegade is BU, or 520 ... Giulia is 952, the Giulietta is 191, etc ...). It is also noted in the VIN.

"12.00.24.04.zip" is the zip file in question, which contains all the data necessary for the update.

If I find anymore VP2 firmware's I'll keep you guys posted. If they're packaged for various models like all of Alfa VP2, Jeep V2, Fiat VP2 (like the above 12.00.24.01 package), these are safer to flash and are known to work. This 12.00.24.04 is customised for the Fiat 500X!

Fiat 500L Project Code is 330

This is as denoted by manual references in Url's relating to the Fiat 500L /330_500L/00_330_500L_530. 07.807_EN_01_03.14_SI_UCRN / 00_330_500L_530.07.807_EN_01_03.14_SI_UCRN.pdf

After some research into European uConnects and the ones you can update via the uconnect site, there is various changes.

A note to our foreign visitors.

The firmware provided for our UK/European uconnects CANNOT be used for the ROW (Rest Of World) uConnect units or you will disable the unit. (e.g. flashing on some Australian region when FCA do not service there)

Be warned when flashing unknown versions or versions from US sites or sites out of Europe or you'll end up with a brick :bang:

Out of interest, does anyone think it is possible to add in features to an existing 5.0 unit (eg live functionality or nav?) using an update to the relevant model? I'm looking in particular to firstly update my Tipo head unit software, with the possibility to improve. My phone keeps asking me to add my vehicle to the UConnect, as it is already linked to my wifes 500 UConnect Live. Ive seen its an option on the currently Tipo (mine was registered Apr 2018). any help or advice would be welcomed.

It might be possible. The firmware's are produced for all sorts of Fiat group, Peugeot and Citroen cars as the Uconnect unit for the 5inch is made by continental the manufacturers just add in their flavoring.

From what I've seen it might be able to do so as the firmware runs on some form of Windows CE OS, and if we find a way to produce the actual system images from the fragment files, it is possible to definitely modify the OS and probably produce our own alternative.

However, I am having doubts as I think the nav version is actually physically different, but I have to find images of both models back to ensure the differences are not massive.

For the Fiat 500L, it seems that if we find a way to change the hardware map from the non nav to nav it could be possible assuming the space requirements are there and the partition layout is the same. I do have doubts it will brick so not too sure to try it.

It probably is possible if the uconnect unit is off the same model (330 and then the B/C/etc.)

By changing the hardware definition variable to the VP2_NAV, this skips out the line of codes below:
Code:
        <!-- Dummy definition -->
        <HARDWARE Hardware="VP2_NAV_DUMMY">
          <PROJECTMAP>* DUMMY_PRJ</PROJECTMAP>
          <PROJECT Project="DUMMY_PRJ">

                <FILENAME>MMP_AUTO_4010108_DUMMY.FRG</FILENAME>
                <PATH>/cddos/AUTO/4010108/VP2_NAV_DUMMY/DUMMY_PRJ/PROG/4010108_DUMMY.FRG</PATH>
              </COPY>

            </DOWNLOAD_SCRIPT>

            </FRAGMENT_INSTALLSCRIPT>
          </PROJECT>
        </HARDWARE>
      </FRAGMENT_ID>

See how the difference is only VP2_NAV_DUMMY. This suggests if we can change the variable name to the VP2_NAV for the hardware, it should actually be possible! However, there are some models which are not compatible with changing them to the VP2 nav as there isn't ones for them. So it actually depends on the model variant you own.

The live services require activation to the Uconnect servers so this isn't possible.

The OS is also firmware signed, I was shocked that they would even do this on a radio unit! If we need to do further developments, we will need to see how the image partitions are being mounted and how can we modify the fragment files. I am not too sure if this is the Windows Kernel/Boot image of the bootloader being signed or Windows CE itself. Actually the fragment files are signed for various Windows stuff so yeah not possible to modify the OS :( We can modify the hardware from the dummy to the nav from the MID script and we can install the nav firmware assuming its one of the C/whatever models supported.

The fact that this runs exe files can show that we can run full blown Windows applications on this thing! (specific to the CPU Architecture of the radio unit). It might be possible to even get rid of the damn TomTom and use something like Navigo for CE.

The uConnect 6 inch can be swapped out with the 5 according to various forums but not too sure about the newer 7 inch from the 500L. Time will come to find out...

Not possible!

So the differences between the radio models with the nav and without is that the software installs a 'dummy' partition on the locations of where the Tomtom should go under.

We can install the navigation back in its relative structure but it will be unusable as there is no physical GPS antenna on the non-nav models. The high possibility that this may screw up the OS partition map is high and I don't know if the actual logical space requirements to store the TomTom core app and then the maps are the same.

I can only see this useful for somebody who has the compass model without the Tomtom as that would have a physical GPS antenna. Seeing how this runs Windows CE, I can't imagine an external gps reciever to work via USB (with some form of plug and play driver).

IMO, I just use a car holder magnet with my tablet and it's been fine.

It would have been nice to use the uconnect system but then it would probably be better to find some interface that allows miracast or even a different radio with some mirroring compatibility.

This URL gives the check for any new software updates on American VIN vehicles. It seems to be the same as the uconnect site but it contains a changelog but seems to be rarely updated.

Some 500X users experience a faster user interface, everything else seems to be the same. Also something about the ecodrive functionality that can be activated and deactivated by voice. Pretty small changes for over a year.

VP2 Firmware Library
As I believe Fiat could take down the firmware at any time, I have mirrored these onto Google Drive for safe keeping in case you wish to downgrade.

I do not have the 01.XX , 04.XX, 06.XX firmwares, these were available from the aftersales Fiat server but they have taken them down. It's likely we will start to see some versions go away too. Unless you have a garage subscription to their service.

334 Variants include the 500X and others which you can find out by researching what project code your car is.

Co Variants include the 500L,500,Mito,Giulietta,Ypsilon,Doblò and Ducato.

Thanks a lot - I just updated my UConnect5 (without NAV) to 13.00.57.05. Everything worked as described (y), including the "Success, please remove the USB Drive" screen.
On the "MORE" screen the system now displays the outside temperature - am I wrong or is this new ?

I am sorry for the late reply but the firmware packages are universal for all uConnect 5' models released by Fiat, the installer will detect your hardware model and install the relevant modules that your infotainment system has (e.g. For example some have DAB, Satellite Radio, SDARS, FM, NAV, uConnect LIVE) and the installer will just install the relevant features.

It does this by checking the variable parameter in the configuration and in my case the D5/EU D290E00 will install the dummy navigation firmware as it has no navigation. If a physical antenna was present on the back, we could rename the partition and install the tom-tom.

The outside temperature has been present on the other firmwares as well for my hardware variant. The system seems to be snappy and I have no usability issues at all.

The fun will end soon with software updates as Fiat are locking down their website under the e-link entry login page later on so that we are forced to go to them to update when we have issues. This is why I created a mirror folder on Google Drive.

I have DAB and SAT antenna on the back. There are relevant plugs in radio compartment. But radio doesn't have SAT nor DAB sockets. Radio receiver only. It looks like someone swapped the radio in the past .
What benefit will give me installing the Tom-Tom if radio can't read the GPS signal? Any simple solution to activate sat unit?
Regards

Yep that might be the case with the swap.

I was just explaining how the uConnect installer updates. There's only two actual software platforms, for us lot without the navigation we get their 'dummy' software. Installing the tom-tom software will be useless without a GPS antenna, also buying their maps without the GPS functionality is a waste of money too in my opinion.

I just use the tomtom navigation app on my tablet and have a magnetic holder above this uConnect device. I have heard TomTom are looking to discontinue map updates for their older devices and I assume this could mean our uConnect too? So installing another uConnect unit with the navigation wouldn't be cost effective either. The newer uConnect seems to run a similar UI to the newer navigation models they produce. This will need further clarification with them.

Re: VP2 Firmware Library

Thanks for the new version,
Updated from 12.00.24.01 to 13.00.57.05, but my 2 problems are not fixed in this release (Voice selection of contacts works not so good as before AND the first word pronounced by the navigation is a bit cut off)

Maybe next time :)
