Brake disc wear

Hi all, has brake wear been an issue with 500Ls .After washing our car last week end I noticed that the front disc wear looked excessive they look like it has eaten about a millimetre in 7500 miles and will land me a big bill much sooner than planned. Our old Croma used eat its discs, genuine Fiat pads were very abrasive so are Fiat up to their old tricks .I think that the discs will be worn out well before 20000 miles and hence the big bill at it's third service!. I will not let that happen! as I will change them after the second service by the third service the only evidence will be that the discs will not be worn out.
Thanks CromaHogberg thanked for this post

Re: Brake disc wear

Hello !
My car Fiat 500l Trakking 2016 year. 31000 km.
I have same problem, wear already 1mm. This abnormal occurrence.
Normal practic should be 1 mm -100000km.
My opinion it wery bad quality of brake disc.
Good luck!

Re: Brake disc wear

www.mtecbrakes.com for discs,

www.ferodoracing.com for DS Performance pads.

Great, lasting combo.

Re: Brake disc wear

I spoke to a work friend and he said the manufacturers are struggling with brake disk wear and it is a good idea to find a better after market combination. At our cars first service they really put some effort into finding something to charge me for! Tires measured and brakes examined. After market brake parts are very reasonable but if my dealer snags these discs within three years it will anything but reasonable! So I am even thinking of switching the pads now and then back again for its service. With our old Croma I found that Brembro disks would last 60,000miles, 100,000km and that with cheap drivetech pads. The good thing about our 500l is that its brake work well and do not bind.

Re: Brake disc wear

Brembo is a good choice....as long as it's their perfomance discs ( expensive..!!)
Just stay away from the inexpensive Brembo Max grooved discs, they are made of (s)crap Chinese recycled steel...

Re: Brake disc wear

Brakes never wore out when the friction material were asbestos and the discs/drums contained hexavalent chromium.

Now they don't, discs are much softer and pads contain metal.

Discs and pads are much cheaper than they used to be, they are now 'consumables'.

One way to avoid the wear is, don't use them.

I see far too many people these days using the brakes to slow the car from high speeds rather than the engine.

Brakes are only supposed to be used for the final stop.

Re: Brake disc wear

I changed my tyres yesterday and measured the front brake discs. They currently are 27.5 mm strong, after 29.000 kilometres. I don't know how strong original parts are but I found that most of the replacement parts found online are 28 mm strong. So 0,5 mm in almost 30 tkm (18 k miles) seem OK to me (given I have the heaviest engine available in the 500L).
Seems there are big differences .... maybe different suppliers, ...

Re: Brake disc wear

Any good brand disc, has the min. thickness stamped on the far outside.
Sometimes corrosion has to be brushed away to show it, but it is there.
